Default PPI heartburn GERD meds

I have had severe acid reflux even back before I was overweight. I take Prilosec OTC 40 mg daily and would like to reduce or stop this medicine.

Has anyone been able to stop taking heartburn meds or reduce them after being low carb for a while?

G'day, Tiger, me again.

Yes, I was able to get off my PPI after being low carb for (quite) a while. It did take me a fair old time, but I took it very slowly.

There have been other threads here in the past about getting off these drugs, so I know I'm not the only one. Good luck to you!

Yes, the key for my husband, who is quite slim, was giving up Wheat. There are protocols using natural products to help you tritrate down the dose slowly. The rebound effect from PPIs is notorious. Here is one previous thread, with a link in it to another thread explaining what products we used. Also check The People's Pharmacy for updates, it is still a frequent question.

Soon after I started eating a low carb paleo diet I was able to stop taking a daily ppi. That was over 10 years ago and I haven't looked back.

I'm another who was on a daily PPI. Like Janet's husband, once I eliminated wheat and all grains, but primarily wheat, I was able to stop the PPI. It wasn't overnight, and it took a few weeks to become adjusted to no wheat in general. At some point after reading a negative article on PPIs and gut health, I stopped. For a period of time, I carried some with me in case of emergency during travel, but never needed them again. Occasional heartburn is now very rare, but I can manage it with some baking soda mixed in water. Constant GERD is in the past.

I actually retrained my stomach to produce enough acid, which is the real cause!

Here's an article about it:5 steps to retrain your stomach

Still take apple cider vinegar in water with meals when I can.

ACV is I use it liberally in all salad dressings, in bone broth, and as an added ingredient in braising meat.

Thank you for all of the informative answers and links. I really appreciate the input and encouragement.

This whole low carb lifestyle thing just offers more and more benefits the farther you go! To think of having no more acid reflux is amazing. I think I'll take it slow for now, get my LC plan more stable, and lose weight then look at reducing the PPI drugs.
