Default Canadian doctors demand changes to Dietary Guidelines.

Story with details how this amazing letter came about and links to FB pages that have the 13 "Points of Change" and all signatures, background data. It is not on a website yet, has many pages and 200 signatures, but the FoodMed story has link to the FB where all is posted.

Quote:
The letter includes a Points for Change “manifesto” that draws from the work of the US Nutrition Coalition and the UK Public Health Collaboration. Among these are that the guidelines should:

Eliminate caps on saturated fats;

Stop advising people to replace saturated fats with polyunsaturated vegetable oils to prevent cardiovascular disease.

Favour “real” food, that is, whole, unprocessed foods that include full-fat dairy and regular red meat;

Recognise controversy on salt and avoid a blanket “lower is better” recommendation;

Not emphasise aerobic exercise as a weight-loss tool. In other words, language should not suggest that people can manage their weight sustainably just by creating a caloric deficit;

Involve a complete, comprehensive review of the most rigorous data available, and Offer “a true range of diets” that responds to the population’s diverse needs;

Go Canada!

"One person at a time" may finally be moving towards "one country at a time."

The fifth signature is Dr Jay Wortman, the other 200 names are a good mix, encouragingly heavy with Family Medicine doctors. No surprise, Dr Yoni Freedhoff not on list, likes real food, fat not so much.

I was wondering whether Dr. Wortman was involved, as he's clearly been practicing this way for a while now. Very encouraging and hopefully this will stimulate some movement in this direction in other countries, particularly Australia, South Africa, the UK (although there have been recent rumblings), and the United States.

Most of the MDs from my area are obstetricians & family doctors. A good start!

Opinion: New Canada Food Guide: Why We Must Get It Right this Time
David Harper
Published on: February 9, 2018

Quote:
Soon Health Canada will unveil its new Canada Food Guide; the last version was released 10 years ago and the previous, 15 years earlier. The food we eat is a very important, if not the most important, factor affecting our health. The new guide will, therefore, have a profound, long-term impact on Canadians, so it is critical that we get it right this time.

Canadians might be surprised to learn that the high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet, recommended by Heath Canada for the last 50 years has never been conclusively validated by science and is, ironically, likely responsible for much of the chronic disease that afflicts our aging population. In a sense, the past 50 years of nutrition science have been a grand experiment on hundreds of millions of North Americans who have been advised to eat a high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet. The results are clear: more than 50 per cent of us are now overweight or obese, insulin resistant, and inflamed; the rates of diabetes are skyrocketing; and cancer and cardiovascular disease are the most common killers. Roughly 70 per cent of chronic disease is caused, directly or indirectly, by what I call the axis of illness: inflammation, obesity, and insulin resistance — three factors that work synergistically over time to worsen health outcomes.

Continues....

I like that "axis of illness" phrase...will be using that
