Angry Spaghetti Sauce

I think I have combed every grocery store in Kansas City looking for some low carb spaghetti sauce, and just cannot find it. I want to be able to make some low carb chicken parmissagn. Is there any certain brand I should be looking for? Do I have to go to a "health food" store to find it? Does anybody have any suggestions? I'm on a mission to find this elusive stuff!!!!
Grrrrrr......so frustrated.

I'm pretty sure there is maybe 1 brand that has no sugar added, but I can't recall it off the top of my head. That's about as LC as you're going to get with pasta sauce. Ragu pizza quick Homestyle ("Homestyle" not "Traditional") has no sugar added if you get in a pinch.

Edited: Googled some things.

Hunts has a sugar-free version but it's in a can, so I'm not sure how good that will be.

Maybe I totally misunderstood that there was even a low carb sauce out there? I don't know. Do you have any suggestions about maybe making my own?

Classico has several versions that are sugar free.

Tomatoes have carbs. The only way to have a "LC" red pasta sauce is just to not add sugar.

netrition.com has a few. I've ordered these but haven't tried them yet. http://www.netrition.com/bella_vita...sauce_page.html

have you thought about making your own sauce? it's disgustingly easy to do, and allows you to completely control the carb count.

2 8oz cans of the lowest-carb plain tomato sauce you can get (i'm talking about the stuff that's sold next to tomato paste)... i've found that hunts has about 10g of carbs for 1 8oz can. you can add mushrooms, onions, herbs and spices, cheese, anything flavorful and low-carb, let it simmer for a little while, then use it for your chicken parmesan. i do the same thing but for mexican foods.

Nothing nicer than making your own - you can also freeze it for later

Classico Florentine Spinach only has 4 net grams per 1/2 cup, in comparison with Carbfit Vodka pasta sauce which has 5 net grams. I don't know if they still make Carbfit---I just have an old unopened jar in my cupboard.

I like the Classico Florentine better.

We make our own, too. DH's family is full-blooded Italian. It's the most amazing sauce I've ever had, but I've not made since I started the plan (DH goes to MIL's to get it). I have no idea what the carb count is. It contains nothing but tomato puree, tomato sauce, water, fatty pork chops, fresh parsley, fresh garlic, onions (a LOT of onions), mushrooms and salt and pepper. It takes about 8-10 hours to make it properly--and, no, a crock pot is not involved! I don't have the courage to eat it yet. I always get cravings after I eat it. But maybe it would be good as a chicken parmesan sauce. I'm going to try to figure the carb count.

If you have a save-a-lot near you their speghetti sauce is "low carb". It has no added sugar at all and is about 1 carb more per serving than the online low carb sauces and tastes MUCH better. Of course I always add a bit more of this and that, but in my opinion the save-a-lot one is much better at a much better price.

Thank you so much for the advice! I'm heading to Save-A-Lot tonight and hope they have it. If not, I'll look at the Classico, and if I can't find that, I'll start making my own! You guys are the best.

Ok, I just did an estimate of my homemade spaghetti sauce.

It's 120 g for the entire recipe (a 1/4 batch of it, anyway--a full batch is HUGE!). The best I can figure it would be 10g per 1/2 C. It's hard to guess what the volume would be, since it simmers all day and reduces down.

That's pretty carby really, I guess, at least for weight loss.

Elle,

are you subtracting fiber from the carb count? And, yes there was a low carb spag sauce. It was put out by carb options, but I don't think they make their products anymore :-(

One suggestion: Maybe reduce the onions by 1/2 or 3/4 and substitute onion powder. Once you get it where it's perfect, post the recipe! :-)

Gia Russa, which I get in Publix.
I don't have a jar of the Basil/Oregano, but I think it's about 5. I do have one I'm going to try. Hot Sicilian.
Calories per ½ cup
Cal 90
Fat 7g
Sodium 440mg
Carb 6
Fiber 2 (so a net 4)
sugars 3
Protein 1g

Note the serving size is less on these labels!
DelMonte. It's in a little 8oz can, so good for me to make small batches.
Just says Organic Tomato Sauce. It's with the pastes, not the sauces.
Calories per ¼ cup
Cal 20
Fat 0g
Sodium 340
carb 4g
fiber less than 1
sugars 4g
protein less than 1 g

Hunt's. Also a little 8 oz can, by the paste also.
Calories per ¼ cup
Calories 15
Fat 0
Sodium 350
Carb 3g
Fiber less than 1
Sugars 2g
Protein, less than 1

I tend to use the little cans myself rather than make a big batch when I'm the only one eating it..

I make my own because it tastes better IMO and I can control what is in it. Here is my recipe.

2 large cans sauce (be sure to check the label for no hidden sugar)
3 Tbsp olive oil
3 cloves garlic (crushed)
Basil, salt, and splenda to taste

I saute garlic and then add the sauce, basil, salt and splenda. Simmer and that's it. Jill
