Cool A question from relatively new expat!

Hey everyone -

I'm thinking seriously about starting a Body for Life challenge, but I'm new to the UK (well, newish) and have no clue where to buy fitness equipment. I checked in the Plymouth area in the spring but came up with nothing.

I *did* manage to locate handweights at Boots - but they are so light! 3, 4 and 5 Kg. I need heavier ones than this!

Could anyone point me in the right direction for getting my hands on serious weight lifting equipment?

Thanks!
-L

Hi LMK

I suggest you take a look at www.argos.co.uk and look at their sports equipment section. They have lots of weight training items at low costs and do home delivery.
Also try http://www.exercisezone.co.uk/store/default.asp
which is where I bought my bargain elliptical trainer. They have a huge range of weight training equipment.

Yellow pages - what's that???

No really - I already looked in the yellow pages and called around. Apparently I live in sticksville, 'cause I came up with nothing.

Thanks for the helpful information neo crone! RC - I'll give them a call, but I did an exhaustive search of Plymouth and Exeter, being near to both.

Yellow pages is the business telephone directory (I'm sure you know that).

You can find them on line at www.yell.com

Good luck

Not sure if this will help, but John Lewis do sell quite a good range of equipment via the internet, you can check out the range here

I did a google when I was looking for my exercise bike and got a company called Powerhouse - http://www.powerhouse-fitness.co.uk/. They deliver for free and arrange a convenient time with you to deliver. They also had a very good sale on at the time! Good luck and welcome

Assuming you're looking for dumbbells at more than 5 kg, I can assure you that they're not easy to find because I've been on the same quest

However, I did eventually find a solution - do a Google Search dumbbells UK and it comes up with several companies. Luckily I live fairly near a mega sportshop which does "proper" weight-lifting equipment. You need to go to a specialist to get over around 5 kg in the UK.

Further to my previous post

In the new Argos catalogue they have a set of weights with two dumb-bell size bars plus one bodybar which - assuming my maths isn't completely off the wall - will allow a pair of dumb-bells of up to around 10 kg each
Good price too, £19.99 for the set. I'm thinking of getting one as I'm about to "outgrow" my current ones. They're on 4.5 kgs each now, the max being 5kg
