Question credible hyperlinks for family doctor

Hi ALL:

I have been hypothyroid for about 26 years, probably more, but that was when i was diagnosed. Have taken Synthroid and gained about 100 lb. over these years. My TSh would be low and the GP would cut my medication and I would promptly gain about 20 lb. within one to two weeks. he always explained the gain by saying that the previous dosage of Synthroid had been keeping my weight artificially low. This happened four times. He refused to give me natural thyroid as he said that the dosage could not be guaranteed. I finally decided I had had enough. I have been on a diet my entire life and yet never lost weight only gained.

In Sept., found a doctor would prescribe Parke Davis Thyroid. Last month I informed my GP that I had been to a different dr. and he had prescribed Thyroid for me - my conscience was getting the better of me - I was worried that he would turf me over this, but he didn't. He said to my surprise that he would check out the web site given to me by the other dr. and see if he would be comfortable prescribing it for me. This was my preference as well, I really don't want two doctors.

I gave him the Thyroid Web ~ Mary Shomon, and suggested he check out Gail's Thyroid Tips for the many hyperlinks.
Gail comes across to me as someone who is rightly frustrated and angry. My Dr. thought the sites were really out there and didn't seem to think they were credible. He may be interested in revisiting a study of other treatment, but I will have to find links where licenced credible doctors talk to doctors. i don't know exactly what bothered him, but as he always seems to do his best, is open minded, never rushes a patient , it may have been some of Gail's comment (nazi doctors) or some of the hyperlinks (T2 and a study on fish?). I also have had some terrible experiences with doctors (mostly specialists) and so fully appreciate where anyone is coming from when they vent their feelings about treatment by doctors. I am not well researched on this topic and don't have a lot of time to come up with sites, so if anyone has compiled a list of these could you share it with me? Sites from major hospitals or universities or articles from endocrinologists might be what it would take . Anything that touts the superiority of natural thyroid over synthetic; the benefits of T3, the unreliability of blood testing after prolonged treatment.

Does anyone know how a person on Synthroid for such a long period of time could grow a thyroid nodule?
Thanks, Melanie

Hi Melanie
Have you posted this on the Thyroid.about.com site? There are posters there whow could point you in the right direction. Frequently enough I see people posting links to websites for doctor's written by doctors. But it escapes me now what they are! (you know how it goes)
But on a side note? I was on Synthroid for only 9 months but I gained weight and it never made me feel better. EVER. Once I got on Levoxyl I started losing weight and feeling a ton better.

Boy can I relate!
I can understand how most Doctors would think that Mary Shoman's site is a little "out there". I think that myself, although I am hypo, and found out about Cytomel from her site. Actually, I felt terrible on Synthroid too, and asked my doctor to change me to Levoxyl. Same drug, different manufacturer. Also, he added Cytomel. That makes a world of diference. Energy level is up, I feel good, and I am losing weight.
