Default Fatty Liver

I just listened to "The Gluten Free Lie with Dr. Peter Osborne" with Sean Croxton, where the doctor mentioned having to take a patient off of the Paleo diet for having fatty liver disease. Agh! I do not want to develop this. Has anyone had any problems with fatty liver on the paleo diet, or any resources where I can find more information about the disease and prevention relating specifically to people on the paleo diet? I see from previous threads on this forum that fatty liver has been linked to fructose consumption, and specifically agave nectar. I would love some references and personal anecdotes, if you have them.

This is the link to the program I was listening to. http://www.blogtalkradio.com/underg...47e700377ec63e9

In answering my own question, I found these links on Mark's Daily Apple. According to this information, we might actually be in the low risk category. Perhaps the specific person referred to in the interview had other extenuating health problems, an unusual variation of the paleo diet, or maybe the doctor misspoke.

I would not pay attention to that guy. Anybody who says that there's a genetic test for whether a person is best suited to a paleo or a vegetarian diet is just plain full of crap.

Alcohol and Tylenol can also cause fatty liver.

Hah! Yeah, in addition to probably being wrong, he sounded kind of mean and defensive. He was yelling at all the people with Hashimoto's.

Fatty liver is caused by sugar, not fat.

Yelling at them? In what way? I mean *I* have Hashimoto's so I'm curious, but not curious enough to want to listen to the whole thing. If I could read it I would, but I don't "do" podcasts and audion interviews, etc. Not enough hours in the day to listen to them.

So when you "take someone off paleo" what do you have them
eat? Do you tell them "Hey, put some crap back into your diet?".

My sister has been diagnosed with fatty liver. She is 6 feet tall, about 145 pounds, eats a pescatarian diet with lots of veggies - good fats like butter, olive oil and coconut oil, moderate fruit, a little wine and beer - she does eat wheat and other grains. But all in all a pretty healthy diet compared to the SAD, and she has rigidly controlled her weight most of her adult life - until she gained a quick 25 pounds when she hit menopause (so that she now feels very "fat"). However at one point she was going through TONS of Tylenol for migraine headaches that she suffered from for years. From what she now reads she feels it's a wonder she didn't die from Tylenol-induced liver damage, but she is convinced that it's all the Tylenol that caused the fatty liver.

Could be, Debbie! I know a lot of people have no idea how dangerous it can be for the liver, especially if they combine it with drinking.

Alcohol and Tylenol will not harm the liver if one is eating a diet high in saturated fat. The combination of foods high in polyunsaturated fats and alcohol/tylenol are what damage the liver.

I'm not so sure about that, Fortitudo, but you're welcome to your opinion.

Tylenol/paracetamol/acetaminophen depletes the glutathione in your liver...
