Hey Chud:
Sorry for taking so long to respond but I've been away. I am not an expert but in response to your query:
1. One of the biggest complaints I have about the Atkins way of eating is the continued insistence of his followers to look for replacements for traditional foods such as bread, bars, shakes, etc. Buying low carb bread, tortillas, bars, shakes and using them is still a dependence on processed foods and these items contain many toxic man-made substances that are detrimental to your health. Besides, they cause extreme cravings for me. I sent an e-mail to Atkins nutritionals on the subject of manufacturing products containing soy proteins and other soy products and asked why they continued to use them in their products when research was proving just how detrimental soy is to human health. They responded that the research was inconclusive.
2. The NeaderThin plan completely restricts the use of all processed, genetically altered, man-made products and concentrates exclusively on whole foods.
3. Legumes, including all beans, green, wax, peanuts, cashews, soy products (protein shakes, tofu, quorn) are expressly forbidden because they contain toxins whether raw or cooked.
4. Dairy products are forbidden because they are man made (processed).
5. Buying organic unmedicated meat is optimal and using free-run eggs is best. Organ meats should be eaten on a regular basis as well as game meat if you can get it.
6. All vegetables except for yams, potatoes, corn (corn is a grain) are allowed.
7. No grain products of any kind are allowed.
8. No vegetable oils are allowed.
9. All fruits are allowed although high sugar fruits such as bananas should be used only once you reach your optimal weight.
10. All nuts are allowed, except for peanuts and cashews, eaten raw and unsalted.
11. Allowed foods should be eaten preferrably raw, or as in the case of meat, cooked. Some people like raw eggs and if you can get them from reliable sources then they are safe (don't use supermarket eggs though unless they are free-run).
12. A rule of thumb is that this is a hunter-gatherer diet and you gauge your allowed foods by what a hunter-gatherer may have had access to and whether a food is edible raw.
13. All manner of seafood is also allowed.
The best way to decide if this way of eating is for you is to read the book by Ray Audette. There is a diet review on this site for the NeanderThin plan. I find that I still need my cup of coffee in the morning sweetened with Stevia and cream. That is my only cheat. But I stick to the plan in all other ways. The fact that my arthritis has completely disappeared is my incentive to stick with it. The fact that my weight loss is very slow is irrelavant when compared to how great I feel.
BTW Chud, man had been low-carbing for millions of years before getting lost in this low fat, high carb hysteria within the last 100 years. Atkins didn't invent it.
