Default What is Paleo?

I found it, what Paleo is. I just had to look a little longer. So, its my understanding you eat meats, veggies, fruits, nuts? Now, couple of questions-is coffee allowed? Unsweet tea? Do you all drink in addition to water, do you drink diet soda?

Just full of questions this morning. Im so trying to find my way, with a WOE that works for me.

Well, it seems most of us adapt it to our personal tastes and habits. Coffee and tea aren't paleo, yet many of us still drink it. Same with diet soda.

Sometimes you need to take steps to get to paleo. You might not end up fully paleo, but probably better off than you were before.

I think lots of us come to paleo because of health issues we find the diet really helps us with.

A couple of web sites to help you figure it out: http://thepaleodiet.com http://paleodiet.com are good places to start

The essentials of the Paleolithic Diet are:

Eat none of the following:

· Grains- including bread, pasta, noodles

· Beans- including string beans, kidney beans, lentils, peanuts, snow-peas and peas

· Potatoes

· Dairy products

· Sugar

· Salt

Eat the following:

· Meat, chicken and fish

· Eggs

· Fruit

· Vegetables (especially root vegetables, but definitely not including potatoes or sweet potatoes)

· Nuts, eg. walnuts, brazil nuts, macadamia, almond. Do not eat peanuts (a bean) or cashews (a family of their own)

· Berries- strawberries, blueberries, raspberries etc.

Try to increase your intake of:

· Root vegetables- carrots, turnips, parsnips, rutabagas, Swedes

· Organ meats- liver and kidneys (I accept that many people find these unpalatable and won’t eat them)

sorry for the questions and thank you all for the quick responses....

So is there a limit to eating the fruit persay? Or like Atkins do you eat however much you want of anything on the allowable food lists? Also-is artificial sweetner ok? Splenda/in moderation of coarse? Is there an induction period or anything like that?

Gosh having fruit in the picture sounds so appealing to me. How do you all like it? Im still going through the threads here. Whats the weight loss results like?

Thanks again.

I personally don't eat any fruit; I'm diabetic, and am pretty strict on carbs. If you aren't diabetic, and don't have insulin resistance issues, try eating some and see how your body responds to it.

Keep in mind, the fruit we have now is much sweeter than the fruit our ancestors ate!

Some of the lower carb fruits include, blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, avocados, and melons.

You're more than welcome, you've picked a good place to learn, this is a wonderful site

Paleo (pure paleo ) stays away from anything artificial.

I'm not 100% paleo, though!

Paleo is more of a perspective than a rigid regime. What you do with that perspective is up to you. If you want to drink diet soda and tea, the paleo-police aren't going to come get you. If you feel like limiting fruit is useful, do it. You can eat however you want, personally weighing for yourself the advantage and disadvantage of any particular aspect of diet.

If you want to shoot up with pure glucose, though, I advise calling some kind of hotline.

True, but that doesn't mean what's being eaten or drank is paleo.

Paleo is what existed at that time, IMO.

I was just saying that for Adell, personally, it doesn't matter whether the paleos drank tea; if in his judgement tea drinking is of negligible importance to his health, then it doesn't matter, to him, that it isn't paleolithic.
