Default Too Much?

I take a daily packet of vitamins that has pretty much everything a good low-carber needs, and nothing he doesn't... or so it would seem. What I take is called VitaStack (by AllMax Nutrition).

VitaStack

9 pills is just entirely too much for me to take daily. My first question is, is there any part of this packet that is not necessary, or can be left out? And secondly, after this tub runs out, what vitamins should I be buying?

Links would be awesome! I don't know nearly enough about what I should be taking, or how much, or even what to avoid.

Yikes Typod, that is one scary-looking ad. Do you lift weights of that size?...and make that face? I have no idea what half the Anabolic ingredients are...and don't think I want to learn

Dr. Westman's clinic patients, who eat 20g total carbs and whatever level of protein satisfies them, are advised to take any generic multi-vitamin without iron (unless your doctor says you need iron, not likely with a guy who eats meat). That's it ... "to be sure you are getting all of the vitamins and minerals you need". Something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Nature-Made-V.../dp/B005BD8A08/ or Centrum Silver. Fish oil is an optional extra.

Personally I add Vitamin D for a specific health reason to keep my levels above 50 and some extra magnesium to help bones and keep things moving.

Haha! No, I lift nothing close to that size, nor do I plan to. I may make the face sometimes. (The weights look like race car tires. lol)

That's exactly what I was thinking (Multi + Fish Oil + Vitamin D) I even knew about the iron, but that is also the exact limits of my knowledge of vitamins. I wasn't sure if there were other things to watch in the generic multivitamins, or other individual supplements. I've heard calcium is a good one?

I went looking for mens multivitamins, but the one you linked is better than any of the ones I found, and WAY cheaper too.

You can usually find NatureMade at a drugstore like Walgreens or I think Kroger too. Also check the SpringValley line at Walmart, that brand often ranks well for quality at a value price and it may have a generic senior multi (for a no iron blend).
I stopped taking calcium beside the small amount in my multi as now there are concerns about too much in arteries and a link to heart disease and other risks listed here. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/ca...NSECTIONGROUP=2
You should get enough calcium from your green vegetables.
Have you found a local farmer or market for veggies? Fall squashes are coming in here...they make good starch substitutes. Hope you and your family are doing well and found some new recipes you like.

My mom found a list of organic and paleo friendly farmers in our state, but each would be a drive. All were meat related though, I bet veggies are easier to come by.

I have this nagging concern about the corn starch in Nature Made products, but after some research I see that it's being used as a carrier for other nutrients by many companies now. I wonder what impact that would have on blood sugar if any. My ignorance is really holding me back on this one, all I can find is positive pharmaceutical uses for corn starch, but my LC training is saying, "RUN AWAY!".

At the very least though (and also because my wife works at Kroger) I think I'm convinced far enough to test drive a pack of these and the Fish Oil + Omega 3 for a month and see how it goes.

Walmart Spring Valley does have an Ultra Men's multivitamin, a generic version of the Centrum Silver Men's Ultra at quick glance. No Iron, supposedly good for heart, eyes and prostate, it had Vit K and iodine. $7.98 for a month's supply, assume it has cornstarch in the base as most do?

Hi Typod,

I feel I should bring this news I heard recently to your attention, regarding taking Fish Oil supplements. I've been using them and giving them to my husband for years. Now it seems they may up the risk for prostate cancer in men. According to all I've heard on TV and read, it just leaves me confused! No suprise there...but here is a link to what has been reported:

http://www.webmd.com/prostate-cance...risk-study-says

For now, I've stopped giving them to the husband.

Only other suggestion I'd made regarding a multi vitamin, is to get one that includes minerals. I read this on an Atkins forum someplace...I have no idea where right now! They did say if you just have the plain vitamins, with no minerals, to use a pinch of Sea Salt in each bottle of drinking water you use. Just enough to make it taste a little. Said that should give you plenty of minerals.

Hope this helps!

You might want to read a more critical look at that fish oil study.

Or this one: Omega-3 fatty acids likely NOT associated with prostate cancer

A big splash across the newspaper always gets people worked up, but when you dig deeper you find most of these stories are pretty flimsy. For some reason when the opposite is found, they never get as much attention.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll read all three and see what I can gather from it all. I find a lot of information on the web isn't backed by anything. I MUCH prefer when I can look at the science journals or at least the results of a study. It's better than, "believe what I say because I also say I'm a doctor..." lol
