Default The battle in my own head

Hi all!

I am new to all of this and so happy to find this group! Did you ever go back and forth in your head when you started low carb about whether it was the right thing to do? I have read other posts where members say "It feels too good to be true." Yesterday was going to be my first day and I did good until I found brownies on the stove that my husband made. I know I need to get rid of that junk...but in my head I thought "well, why don't I follow something that allows everything in moderation."

It truly is a battle. I am ready to do the work...and to make lifelong changes. I just want to make sure I am doing what is best.

Anyone else go through this?

Welcome aboard. I think most of us went through that and some for a longer time than others. It's to be expected when we embark on significant changes in our life. If you stick with it you just might find yourself losing those feelings.

I know what you mean. It can be extremely hard at first, but it gets easier. At first I couldn't have anything I couldn't eat (except for the things I didn't like) in the house at all. My husband, who doesn't need to lose weight, lost about 10 lbs. Then gradually foods that tempted me could be in the house, as long as I couldn't see them. Now I've gotten to the point where I can cook "normal" foods - like rice or potatoes - for my husband & the temptation to eat them is barely a pin prick.

Mind you, this journey has taken a few years! And I am still occasionally blindsided by temptation when I see or smell a delicious, but forbidden, food. But it does get easier.

Yes! Dozens of times. I'm restarting just now. For me, there have been two problems: One, starting because it's the 1st of the month, but I'm emotionally not ready. Or two, concentrating on what I'm giving up rather than thinking of it as, "This is what I eat." Not "This is what I eat now" but that I'm a member of an unusual tribe, and this is what we eat.

So I'm back with fresh reserve -- I hope you are, too. It does work. There are dozens and dozens of happy successes here.

I totally know what you mean about focusing on what you CAN'T have. It is almost like a little voice saying "But there are brownies out there". LOL.

I know once I see the number on the scale going down I will be good - but now I just need to get to that point.

Thank you all for replying!

I've been doing this WOE since 1972. 44 years! That's unimaginable! If you need proof that this eating LCHF will make you healthier, then think of me as an example. In July I'll be 71 and I walk 2 miles every morning before dawn, do yoga, take only one prescription medication (by choice, not because of an illness). I'm normal weight for my height, age and weight.

Like anybody, I go off plan when my mind fools me into it. Sugar can make my fingers hurt when I bend them first thing in the morning. All in all, I'm a healthy female example. My only illness was brought about by using IUDs and I had a hysterectomy. That's it! In all these years.

Eating "against the rules" is hard at first, but believe me when I tell you that it pays off.

Hi, Momx5. This is a good place to ponder questions like that. Why don't you start a journal here, where people can talk with you individually? You can describe your goals, your fears, your eating plan. Other people can really help.

Most "diets" work. Even "everything in moderation" works. That is, if you can figure out what "moderation" is for you, and stick with it for life. Usually that means counting calories. But then, you can probably eat 900 calories worth of brownies as your daily allowance and not do your body any good. So....

Here we think seriously about the quality of the food, not so much about the quantity.

The only way you'll know what "works" for you is to give some plan a good long trial for yourself. So pull up a chair. Read all about low-carb eating. Pick a plan and get started.

Best wishes!
P. S. You'll find a good quick-start plan for free at Dietdoctor.com. Lots of encouraging success stories, too.

You know as well as I that the "everything in moderation diet" doesn't work otherwise we wouldn't be in the shape we're in. Sugar is ADDICTING. And really, really bad for you. Really bad.

Plus, we've been "programmed" (more like hoodwinked) over the years to believe eating all that fat (butter, bacon, etc) is bad for us.

It's time to get real! Get the brownies out of the house NOW! And tell DH to play nice.

Bacon instead of brownies. That's the deal.
