Candice’s Low Carb Asian BBQ Sauce

Many MANY years ago I worked in a restaurant baking desserts. To this day I still remember how good the food was there! One of my favorite things was the Asian BBQ sauce. I remember it having quite a bit of soy sauce and tons of sugar. Did I say TONS? Well when low carbing these things are just a no no.. really would add up quickly!
So here is my version of an Asian BBQ Sauce. There are still some western flavors in there like the chili powder and cumin, but it seems to play well with the soy and star anise. Also instead of adding a lot of splenda some of the sweetness in this sauce comes from apple. To me this tastes pretty darn good for being so low carb!

Makes approximately 1 3/4 cups BBQ Sauce

Ingredients:

2 teaspoons oil
1/2 cup chopped red bell pepper, rough chop(about 2 oz)
1/2 cup chopped red onion, rough chop(about 2 oz)
4 clove garlic, rough chop
1/2” piece of ginger, rough chop(about 2 teaspoons)*
1/2 small apple(50g), rough chop
1 cup crushed tomatoes
1 1/2 cups water
1 Tablespoon soy sauce
3 Tablespoons Splenda
2 teaspoons chili powder
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
2 whole star anise**
1/4 cup + 1 Tablespoon vinegar

Instructions:
In a sauce pan heat oil.
Add bell pepper, onion & garlic. Saute until lightly browned. Add remaining ingredients. Making sure to add vinegar last.
Reduce heat and simmer on low for 20 minutes.
Allow to cool a bit.
Put all liquid into blender and pulse until smooth. Strain through a fine mesh strainer.

Keep BBQ sauce in an air tight container in the refrigerator until needed.

Can also be stored in freezer. I freeze mine in an ice cube tray then pop out and keep in a baggie. This makes it easier for portion control. Each ice cube is 2 Tablespoons.

Makes approximately 1 3/4 cups BBQ Sauce

Carbohydrate, Total 2.01 g
Sugars, total 0.88 g
Fiber, total dietary 0.49 g
Protein 0.39 g
Total lipid (fat) 0.08 g
Net Carbs 1.52g

*if you don’t have fresh you can use 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger. Just add when you add your remaining ingredients instead of with the onion, bell pepper, and garlic.

** you can find star anise in an Asian market
