Default Playlists....

Hi guys (and ladies),

For as long as I can remember, music has been a huge part of my life.
Growing up I remember listening to everything from Marty Robbins, to Elton John, to Alice Cooper to The Platters.

My mom, (my gosh I miss her), was a fan of all types of music. If it had a beat she could listen to it.

Well once I started working out, I decided that music was something that would certainly help the boredom, (pain), of lifting and cardio so I put a stereo system in my home gym and now listen to music during each and every workout.

Over the years I've found that there are certain songs that really bring out the best in me while doing my workouts. Of course this list changes depending upon what mood I find myself in, but there are a few staples that I've had on my Mp3 player since 2003, that I just can't do without.

Here is a small sample of the music that gets my heart beating and that makes me push a little harder, be it on the stairmaster, stationary bike, treadmill or weight machine:

You Oughta Know - Alanis Morissette
Sinners Welcome - Cadillac Sky
Money for Nothing - Dire Straits
Bodies - Drowning Pool
Joe's Garage - Frank Zappa
Amos Moses - Jerry Reed
Look Into the Future - Journey
Fly Away - Lenny Kravitz
Hallelujah - Leonard Cohen ( know, a little strange for a workout song)
Lifehouse - Hangin' by a Moment
Come to My Window - Melissa Etheridge
Enter Sandman - Metallica
Little Lion Man (really anything by Mumford) - Mumford & Sons
Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
Give it Away - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Circus - String Driven Thing
Don't Call Us - Sugarloaf
Green Grass and High Tides - The Outlaws
Blitzkrieg Bop - The Ramones
Cherry Bomb - The Runaways
Emerald - Thin Lizzy
My Way - The Sex Pistols
I Hate Everything About You - Ugly Kid Joe
Fall to Pieces - Velvet Revolver
Werewolves of London - Warren Zevon

Thanks to my mom I love pretty much all types of music. I'm not a huge fan of country, (although I do like some of it), and I also don't listen to rap or hip hop. For some reason it just doesn't do anything for me although some might argue that the Chili Peppers is at least a form of this style of music.

Do the rest of you find that music makes your workouts go more smoothly and if so, what types of music really "do it" for you?

I'm always looking for new music to add to my collection so give me some ideas.

Dave

Oh, just a little story to go along with my above post....

I got my first Mp3 player somewhere around 2002 and at that time it was one of the newest electronic gadgets on the market.

At that time I was into running, even though my body resisted each and every stride I took.
The only way that I could run any distance was by removing myself from the pain my body was feeling and I found that the best way to do this was to pick out a spot on the wall and to focus on that spot with everything that I had in me.

Anyway, the first night that I took my Mp3 player to the gym, I put in my headphones, turned up the volume, and began my session of self inflicted torture, on the treadmill.

I was well into my run......focusing on my usual spot on the wall in front of me and was totally oblivious to everything else that was going on around me in the cardio room.

Well suddenly I got that feeling that something wasn't right.....
I wasn't exactly sure WHAT wasn't right but still, that feeling was there.
At that point I took my eye off of the "spot"..... at the same time realizing that I had been singing out loud....and glanced to my right. Sure enough, there was this really cute girl on one of the stairmasters, looking at me and laughing. (There was also a guy on one of the stationary bikes and he had this amused "what a dumb ass look on his face).

I can't being to tell you how embarrassed I was.
I have no idea how long I had been singing or what had come out of my mouth while singing.
I'm one of those people that never sing every word to a song. I'll just go along and maybe sing out a phrase, or a line or maybe even a word to a song, (besides, since i was running I know I was probably gasping, more than singing anyway).

Well after giving this girl a sheepish grin and shrugging I returned to my self inflicted torture while telling myself that I was a complete and total idiot.
This situation was made much better when the girl got off of her machine....walked over....mouthed the words "thanks" with a smile and walked out of the cardio room.

I still felt like an idiot but man......since I was still 50 lbs. overweight at the time that smile sure did feel good. :-)

So, I guess music hasn't always served me well, but for the most part it's been a good part of my life.

Ha, I love to see what other people have on their lists. That "Sexy and I know it" song is hilarious (and good). Thanx for listing these, I get on itunes and my mind goes blank. I've got Flo Rida, (sp?), "Only Girl in the World" - Rihanna, "Pump up the Jam" and a certain one-hit wonder from the 80s I will not name, among others.

Sofi Needs a Ladder - Deadmau5

I recommend almost anything from Mocean Worker. Most of their stuff is really good music for exercising to.

This is good - let me just find my ipod and I'll reproduce the playlist that got me a 10k PB the other week (it's mostly happy house and a bit of Abba to warm up to as I recall)...

Sorrento -- I love Deadmau5 and Guetta; Sofi Needs a Ladder is one of my new faves while working out. Do you have Hardwell/Tiesto's Zero 76? What about Deadmau5 Ghosts n Stuff? Oooh and On the Dancefloor (Guetta)? Memories (Kid Cudi/Guetta) is awesome as well. C'Mon (Tiesto/Diplo).

I haven't heard Zero 76 but will check it out, thanks a lot IvannaBFit. I'm loving Martin Solveig's work at the moment, Big in Japan and The Night Out. Also Greyhound by Swedish House Mafia.

I probably shouldn't admit it, but lately I've really been enjoying running to Korean pop (Girls Generation and KARA).
