BBQgal---how much land do you have? We are hoping to retire in about 5 years and buy some acreage--mostly so we can put in a large vegetable garden and some fruit trees. I grew up on a farm and really have missed it all these years we've lived in the city. I can't plant much now because of all the underground utilities in my yard.

HI Fluffybear,
I just have a simple backyard my garden is approximately
5 ft wide and about 20 ft long. i am using flower pots also to plant my hot peppers. I know I have planted allot; I'll have to work real hard for the garden not to turn into a jungle lol.

Hi,
Does anyone know about growing hot peppers?
I planted my seeds a couple weeks ago and nothing has happened yet. I am trying to keep the pots in the sun.

Hi,
I decided to give up on the hot pepper seeds none of them came up so I went to the nursery and bought plants. they were on sale 50 cents so I figured I couldn't go wrong.

I grow my habarano's and thai hots from plants, because pepper plants are very slow growing, and i do not usually get peppers till the end of summer, even starting with plants, also they are very delicate, any cold will kill them.

How old were the seeds? If they were from last year or before, they might not germinate. Sometimes you just get a bum lot. I live in Ohio just south of you and its been so cool here this spring and early summer that nothing much is germinating.

Hey BBQgal, how deep did you plant the pepper seeds? Is it possible they were planted to deep? What all was in your soil (manure, etc)?

Hi kbfunTH,
I probably planted them too deep and the ground was too cold. A newbie mistake
my plants are doing well for bargain plants at 50 cents.

I've made that mistake plenty of times. Can't beat the price of plants at 50 cents. I think I paid 50 cents for the two I planted this year as well. I was hesitant at only planting two plants, but with the composted pig manure and some good quality fertilizer, they are producing more than we can keep up with. Gonna pickle some and put 'em way for later I think.

bumping gardening

I there I totally agree gardening is an amazing exercise ..a labor of love ...this week between working it is time to give my beds some lime and turn compost in

just pulled the last of tomatoes

I plant garlic at the end of the month..it was a beautiful year in my yard I almost have a garden with perpetual bloom!!! I have worked on that for a very long time!

anyone else cleaning the garden and getting it ready for winter? how about what do you plant for the winter?

the only thing I put in the ground now is the garlic other than that I will move and devide plants for the next month

happy gardening!

I need to clean my garden but I'm also planting a winter garden. Cauliflower, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, etc. This is my first attempt so I don't know how it will work out. I hadn't thought about planting garlic.

If you have not attempted garlic you should! check with your cooperative extension and see when the best time to plant it is ..the thing I love about this is ..I plant mine crowded together at the end of October and in June I thin them and have garlicy scallions....then...I get the garlic flowers to cook ..they taste like crispy garlic string beans! the end of July early August the tops die and I have the most amazing home grown garlic I you can imagine!

three crops of things that are garlicy for one effort of planting ..

I do two raised beds and still never have enough to last me a year ...(of course I give some away but mostly we eat it)

I wanted to plant more winter things and am sure in my climate I can ...

I have berries...fruit trees (I planted all dwarf and all 5 way trees so they would not take up much room)

maybe next year I will try more veggies ..
but really I would be so happy with perpetual blooms of my flowers
