Default Antihistamines, sleepaids linked to dementia and brain shrinkage

I have had a multi-decade habit of taking OTC unisom (half a pill) before bed time every night.

Happy to report I've stopped it. I cut down to 1/4 pill and then the last two nights I've stopped. Yay!

I used to take a "pink pill" (generic diphenhydramine) fairly regularly. On this WOE, I have lost most of my allergy symptoms, and sleep much better. These drugs were always considered relatively safe before, but it seems that few "safe" medications ever are.

Thanks for posting. Kat

Well, this may be the answer to why my mom has AD. She seldom had a pocket that didn't hold an OTC sinus allergy inhaler. My dad got frequent hay fever but I don't know if he took much in the way of antihistamines for it. He didn't have AD but he passed away in December after a little over a month of heartbeat that was too fast and they couldn't give him the usual blood thinner because when they tried it, it revealed a bleed in his brain. He was 89 and while he did have three arteries bypassed and several stents placed, he lived longer and a more normal life than we ever expected.
The point about that being that while the antihistamines might bring on AD for some, not everyone reacts that way. It's all such a mystery. It drives me nuts.

I think they actually looked at the brain with MRI, pet scans and such. There were physical changes. Probably some people do better than other, but who wants to risk it? Not me!

Wow, good for you, Nancy. I hope you are sleeping well.
Thx for the article. It's funny how some summers I'm completely allergy free and other summers, depending which way the wind's blowing, everyone around me seems to have them worse. Good to know those meds have side effects!
