Question Diet Soda?

Does anyone know the story with diet soda? I've been on the diet for nearly four months and have been drinking only water. I started to get sick of just water and went to the site yesterday and noticed an article that said diet sodas were zero carbs except some fruit sodas had hidden carbs. So last night I treated myself to a Diet Coke and was in heaven!

This morning I got on the scale and the kilo that I thought I lost the day before was back again. Other then the soda I thought my eating day was pretty good yesterday- grilled chicken for lunch and the crustless quiche recipe from this site for dinner. I had popcorn last night as well but I have become addicted to popcorn and it hasn't affected my weight loss in the past!

Is the extra kilo just a normal fluctuation (although I often have stand stills I don't often go up) or is the soda actually a no-no? I figure I can keep drinking the soda and if it is still hindering my weight loss I have to drop it but I thought someone here might have had experiences with diet soda or can seperate fact from fiction?

hi there Alisonia

Its one of those "your mileage may vary things" Strictly speaking diet drinks are ok on a LC diet...from a carb point of view.

Trouble is some people react strangely to the artificial sweetners in them and they can cause stalls and water retention.

The kilo you seemed to gain back could be water retention from the diet coke or it could just be a natural fluctution. It is impossible to have gained 1kg of fat overnight..so don't panic

You may need to experiment a little more to be certain.

For me I can't have too much as it gives me raging headache.....but that's a whole other story

Lesley

Default Popcorn

Hi Elle

I think you might be right about the popcorn. I thought my book said that some kinds are ok but from surfing this site I think it may be a no-no. I might have to wean myself off popcorn. I have become completely addicted and was still losing weight while I was eating it regularly but my weight loss did slow down and that may be a cause. Thanks for the reminder and I think I am going to look for other snacks.

Default try making a lemonade!

Hey hows it going,

i was sick of water and soda water as well, but try putting lemon juice and some spenda with you water or even better, try it with the soda water, just like they used to at the lemonade stands.

Who knows you may even be able to sell the stuff as well.

Try Pepsi Max. I think it has no Carbs, no sugar and no fat.

And tastes delicious too!

Default I found that...

... the moment I went into LF Jelly and started drinking SF softdrinks I stalled gained 2 pounds in 2 weeks rather than my usual woosh fairy visit. Gotta love aspartain and caffine.

Personally I don't find water that bad, and love it. The lemonade idea sounds fabulous!

Ciao

Coles, Bi-lo and Newmart have their own brands of lemonade sweetened with Splenda. It is also the cheapest in the store. I have not found any other flavours using Splenda.

One cup of air popped popcorn has 6.6 grams carb so I would stay well away I have never been able to eat only one cup but maybe you did
I have the occasional diet soft drink but not on a daily basis. It still has chemicals and stuff in it even if not carbs.
I keep it for a treat.

Hi Loraine (and everyone else)!
Golden Circle diet soft drinks are sweetened with Splenda.
They don't have lemonade, but they make a very nice lemon squash with 1.9g carbs per can. Their other soft drinks have up to 3.4g carbs.
Cheers.

I've got a feeling that what Americans call "Soda" is actually our soda water. I'm not 100% sure, but I'd stay away from Coke etc. if I were you.

Default Actually

A "soda" is a soft drink. Just as a "pop" is a soft drink.

They are odd like that.

/runs and hides from the americans.

Default soda v. pop

You're right "soda" and "pop" are interchangeable words for the same thing. Some parts of the country use "pop" and some use "soda" when refering to soft drinks. Here in Michigan we use
"pop" when asking for a soft drink, if you hear someone ask for a "soda" it's a dead giveaway they are from out of town.
Since we seem to have shifted the discussion to cultural differences, maybe you could answer a question for me.
Just what the heck is a "vegimite" sandwich?

Hi Fifth Musketeer,
Vegemite is a yeast extract. It's similar to Marmite (a British yeast extract that's not nearly as yummy as Vegemite )
It's a dark brown spread - quite salty. Definitely an aquired taste.
We Aussies are brought up on our Vege. Most of us love it.
It's high in B Vitamins, in fact it used to be prescribed for little babies. The mum would put a pea sized scoop into a bottle of boiled water and bub would screw up its nose then eventually drink it. No wonder we're addicted - we were fed it from the cradle.
I don't think it compares to anything American. Mind you the company is now American owned!
Cheers, Fifth!

Rosebud
