Default Eating before bed / at night - ok, good, bad?

I don't remember specific mention in Neanderthin regarding nighttime eating. Some days I have to work late and am hungry at 8 or 9PM; I usually go to bed around 10. I still find myself bound to the old warnings of not eating anything 3 hours prior to bedtime, but then I have trouble getting to sleep on an empty stomach and wake up starving. But if you were to eat only protein and fat and then go to bed, that shouldn't turn to fat, should it? I'm curious as to everyone's habits regarding night eating--how much, how soon before bed, what specifically, and what affect does it have on losing weight? Thanks.

Howard

If I'm hungry before bed then I have a snack. I can't sleep if I'm hungry. I've even woken up in the middle of the night hungry and have a snack. My weight loss doesn't seem to suffer.

Same here. 9 times out of 10 I am not hungry before bed but on the odd occasion if I am I have had a snack and a warm drink before going to bed.

That it should be worse to eat before you go to bed than any other time of the day is an old myth. What matters is the total intake and it doesn’t matter when you eat. So you can have your dinner at 11 o’clock if you had no time before. I too hate to go to bed hungry, and I often have my dinner late.

I for one cannot eat dinner late because I hate going to bed on a full stomach. If I am very hungry before going to bed and know that the growlies will keep me awake, I may have a light snack. Sometimes just a glass or two of water work just as well. However, Ray Audette mentions several times in his book "If you're hungry, eat."

I like going to bed slightly hungry so that when I wake up in the morning I have a "real" hunger. I notice that it seems that there are different kinds of hunger and sometimes it is cravings, not actual necessity of food that is talking. I can feel the difference when I wake up in the morning. For me it is better to NOT eat before bed.

I go to bed late, at around 12 midnight or 1a.m. I work until 10 p.m almost every day (I'm a tutor). So when I get home at 10:20 p.m, I have a glass of Gazpacho (cold veggie soup) and a piece of cheese or sausage, if that. That way the growlies go away and I just have a light supper. Sometimes I just have the Gazpacho.

I eat when I am hungry

if I wake up in the middle of the night I eat if I need to. Which now that I have been LCing is rarely.

What I am doing now is eating meat or protein if I eat late. Which I usually do because of my work schedule.

We sometimes don't eat dinner until well after 8 sometimes even 9:30. I do eat about every few hours though.

I am having pretty good results so far. We are all different though.
