All I can tell you is my personal experience. Before I went low-carb my cholesterol numbers were not good and my triglycerides were high. I weighed north of 300 pounds and was headed for metabolic syndrome and pre-diabetes. I started on an older version of Atkins which evolved into an Atkins / SouthBeach hybrid. Within months I lost a lot of weight and went in for my annual physical. My primary healthcare provider (a PA-C) took one look at my labs and asked me which statin I was on. My total cholesterol and LDL were way down, my HDL was up and my triglycerides had been cut in half. When I told him I wasn't on any statins or other cholesterol medications he told me "well, keep doing whatever you're doing". All I told him was that I had replaced all baked goods (I'm a recovering cookie addict), pasta, french fries, etc with "lots of healthy vegetables" and had increased my intake of non-fried poultry and fish including lots of oily fish like salmon. I never used the term low-carb but rather described the changes I had made. He gave me his blessing. My health was never better including my liver and kidney function tests, c-reactive protein and A1C.

For decades dietary fat and cholesterol were vilified as the enemies of heart health. In reality, high levels of transfats and simple carbs were the culprits. There is also a misunderstanding about dietary protein and kidney health. If you have healthy kidneys, a moderately high protein diet (anything can be taken to excess) is not harmful but it can raise the markers creatinine and BUN. Since these markers also go up with kidney disease, it is mistakenly assumed that the protein causes kidney damage. In fact, the creatinine and BUN can be raised by either a high protein diet or kidney disease but the former does not necessarily cause the later. If you have kidney disease, you need to consult a nephrologist to determine appropriate protein intake.

That said, some people go absolutely ape crap with protein, which is not beneficial. I'm not going to attempt to argue the exact amount of protein that is good or bad, but suffice it to say that a diet that is almost exclusively protein is not a good idea.

At the weight your at now just cutting out sugar , flour of anykind and potatos should result weight loss. It would give you time to read and study different low carb plans while making forward progress on the weight loss . It should also prevent induction flu because you would be easing down on the carbs rather than abruptly losing them.
