Default Just an observation

I know I have not posted a whole lot yet, but this morning I had to. Lots of people, co-workers family etc.. have noticed my weight loss, and of course the first qusetion is what diet am I on. I answer low carb, and the response is " wow how cool", or they tell me about their low carb diet. As they are eating chips talking to me about it. But......the minute I say Atkins, the story then becomes about how dangerous Atkins is, how I am going to lose all my muscles, or they will tell me of a gallbladder story, (mine was destroyed by me eating my way large with carbs) one girl told me she heard of someone's kidneys exploding. That was the funniest response I got to the Atkins answer.
Silly people when are they going to get it. There is a couple girls at work doing other plans with no losses, and the one that's doing well on the other plan (WW) and she walks around acting like she is starving all the time, and cranky. They scan every little thing on their lil phone app, I can just take a glance at the carb content and munch away. (That's freedom to me) I am happy, full all the time, never feel starved. And my scale speaks for itself, and so far so good on the exploding kidneys,
That's my story, I would love to hear what some of you have experienced.

Omigosh, our decade-long joking about kidneys asploding has come to pass as an actual urban legend.

Jey was commenting in a journal this morning about people eating "keto" and bashing Atkins. Meanwhile, their version of keto is more often than not closer to Atkins than it is to the more stringent sort of diet necessary to predictably raise ketones on a regular basis.

When I first started I was very gungho about Atkins, and one of my sisters was very worried about me. She supported me though, and prepared food that I could eat. But didn't really approve of what I was doing.

But as time wore on, it took me some time to actually lose the weight and keep it off (over 2 years now). And then that same sister gained weight with menopause, so asked my advice and is mostly eating low carb too!

I've been pretty lucky really though. It was really only after family and friends could see the difference, that they started asking how I did it. I was very surprised at the number of positive responses. And now that they can see I am keeping it off, they remain positive about the way I eat. My kidneys haven't asploded either!

The timing of your observation is uncanny as teaser mentioned.

If their response to LC was "cool" you can up your Cool Factor even more by saying you are on The Ketogenic Diet (sounds sciencey) or you are "Doing Keto" that moves you beyond cool to Hipster.

I had the benefit of saying I was seeing Dr. Westman at a Duke Clinic and using his diet. It is, of course, based on exactly what Dr. Atkins used in his clinic, to stay on week one induction until goal and not add nuts. That gave it the hospital ratings halo and they wanted copies. But I learned early on that if I described it as "like Atkins" or based on Atkins, the same negative comments you had were next!
What's that movie quote about "Don't talk about the Fight Club"? Don't Talk about Atkins unless you are safely within the LCer Forum Club.

Now I focus on "Just Eat Real Food" or "Eliminate Grains, Sugar and Processed Seed Oils". If they seriously want to know more, I have a card to hand out with the book name, Why We Get Fat which has the diet in appendix, https://www.dietdoctor.com/lowcarb, and my email for even more info. There is a difference between LCHF and an Atkins plan with shakes and artificial sweeteners, so can emphasize that and not the low carb foods and carb levels that are just like Atkins. That never goes well.

Just call your plan "low carb" not Atkins. If someone actually wants to know the details you can give it to them.

Too funny. I'm only a little over a week in so I have not encountered any such questions. I am hoping one day someone will say wow you've lost a lot of weight. Than I can say, "Yea" and leave it at that. :-)

I'm "lucky" to have diabetes. I tell people I eat lchf because it's the only diet that helps my bg. People without diabetes - or who don't know anyone with it - don't try to pretend they know anything about it. The only people who ask questions are fellow diabetics who are interested in learning about the diet. Tho sadly, that's rare. Too many would rather eat what they want & "cover" with insulin. I have a friend who keeps ending up in ER because of her sudden lows or highs.

The only person who has tried to convince me I should change my diet was a very annoying vegetarian. Fortunately, she was easy to avoid.

I try not to talk too much about what I eat and why. People tend to push back no matter what. It's right up there with religion and politics.
