Smile How Much Water?

I know I read this somewhere on here, but I can't find it.

I'm 185...how much water do I need to drink each day (in ounces).

And, my understanding is that for each caffenated beverages, I need to add an additional glass. ( I know, I should lose the coffee, but let me concentrate on one change at a time!).

Thanks in advance for your help...

Pam

Cool

Okay, I think I found my answer, but would be much appreciative if someone with a little more experience in this area would confirm my findings!

I'm 185 and wish to lose 35 pounds. I am more than 25% overweight. I have drank 28 oz of caffeinated beverages today.

Therefore:

8 - 8oz glasses
2 - 8oz glasses for being more than 25% overweight.
28 oz of additional water (to make up for the caffeine)

Which calculates to:

108 oz of water.

Is this correct or should it be more?

Thanks in advance,

Pam

What I do is aim for a gallon/day, which is 128 oz..... sometimes I make it, sometimes I don't....but it's a good amount to shoot for no matter what your weight or intake is. AND....it's easy to remember which is always a good thing!

I really, really pay close attention to my water intake since the summer in Houston is SOOOOO hot and especially after exercising outdoors. You'll feel much better when you're properly hydrated and it cures all kinds of cravings! Carry a bottle with you always and you'll have no trouble getting to your H20 goal!

Default Water water everywhere!

Sounds good to me.

everyone should drink the minimum of
8 - 8oz. glasses a day plus
1 8oz glass for every 25 lbs you need to lose.

Sorry, but I can't confirm the additional water needed when you drink caffeine. I just stay away from caffeine. Good luck to you.

Exclamation Water, Water, everywhere

A gallon a day Teri, I'd be water logged, however a gallon in the UK is 8 pints and UK pints are 20 fluid ounces and so that 160 oz of water. I think the US pint is 16 fluid ounces and so thats 32 oz less. Quite a difference.

I'd say that that is a good quantity to shoot for, particularly if the weather is hot or you are in an air conditioned environment. I tend to have a miniumum of 8 glasses a day which is around 4 litres or 64 oz, but prefer more. I carry a water bottle with me whereever I go it is a good way to keep your water level up.

The amount you drink also depends on how easy it is to get to the toilet or restroom. At home it is a lot easier than disappearing every 20 minutes at work. Whatever you do though do not become dehydrated.

Hi Pam!

You almost had it right, but when you drink something with caffeine in it, you should drink twice as much water as whatever caffeinated beverage you had to make up for the diuretic effect of the caffeine. For example, if you had two 8 oz. mugs of caffeinated coffee (16 oz. total), you should drink an additional 32 oz of water. I pretty much stay away from caffeine and just try to drink half my body weight in ounces of water which conveniently adds up pretty close to 64 oz, plus 8 oz for every 25 lbs that I still want to lose. I often go over that, though and have close to 4 liters of water a day or more if it's hot or I'm particularly thirsty. Funny thing I've discovered about drinking water. The more you drink, they more your body craves it! Agua est Vita!

Thank you so much - I have about 10 more lbs to lose - so if I drink 4.5 litres that should be about right

Exclamation That Water Question?

Lucy - Well done you if you can drink over 4 litres a day.

Quote:
4 liters = 64 oz......... MINIMUM

Thought this was high. 16 oz = 455 ml
Therefore 64 oz is just under 2 litres.

So whilst I would encourage you to drink as much as possible, I would say the minimum water you should drink is 2 litres.

Hey Teri, how do you manage to drink so much each day?

Default Thanks for the correct calculations and I lost 3 pounds!

Thanks!

Well, I missed it yesterday by 11oz then. I drank 125oz, and should have had 136oz.

Thanks for the input. Since the caffeine isn't going away just yet, it's good to know how to adjust the water intake.

BTW...my scale (who I don't altogether trust) says I lost 3 pounds yesterday. This is also the first day in a LONG TIME that I drank so much water. I'm thinking that had something to do with it, rather than the diet just yet.

Any insight?

Pam

It is WIDELY reported that "whooshes" are associated with increased water intake..... how else is your body going to get rid of all that excess fat??

Ok, my curiosity (and confusion) got the best of me and I had to look up these volume conversions on the web....

8 8oz glasses = 64 oz. = 2 quarts = 1/2 gallon

32 oz = 1 quart = .94 liters (so 1 qt. is almost equal to 1 liter)

4 qt = 1 gal = 3.79 liters

So the MINIMUM one should drink is 2 liters/day.

LittleAnne, How do I drink so much?? There are quite a few who drink 4-6 liters a day!! That's 50% more than I drink!!....a gallon and a half!!

I keep a water bottle by my side almost all the time..... in the car, for sure because it's so hot here. And I drink green tea all day at my desk....that's almost 2 liters right there! At first it takes a conscious effort to get it all in.....then it's automatic. I feel naked without my water bottle or glass sitting right next to me!

Know where I drink the most water? Sitting in front of the computer! Good thing the potty is also close by.

You've got to be a little careful here - just as the "pints" are not the same, the "fluid ounces" in each case are not the same, either. There's about a 4% difference. So, while the UK gallon has 25% more "ounces" than a U.S. gallon, each U.S. fluid ounce is larger than it's UK counterpart.

The bottom line is that an Imperial Gallon has 20% more water than a U.S. Gallon.

Personally, I try to be at a minimum of one gallon (US) and am generally near or above two gallons. Definitely do stay hydrated - I failed to do that and got a bout of gout - not fun.
