Here's an easy version:
Heat chicken broth, add a spoon of miso paste (I like red, white is milder) The trick is to add the miso very slowly and gently; I just let the spoon with the paste rest in the barely simmering broth. Add anything you like --tofu, green onion, sliced daikon, shredded chicken, mushrooms, shiratake noodles. I like it with an egg poached in for breakfast.
Use unsalted broth, the miso itself is very salty. You just use a little (tablespoon?), so I think the total carb count is not all that high.
Authentic recipes call for shaved dried bonito and those sticks of dried seeweed. I'm too lazy for that, I like mine just fine.
