Default What kills your hunger?

So, yesterday I was hungry. As in seriously hungry. Ate low carb, stayed within limits (currently in Induction). Checked my calories on Fitday, and I ate 2900 calories! Mind you 70% of it was fat, but that's still way too much. I'm only 5'3''!

My snacks were pork shoulder, and some veggies (with fats) to meet my carb limit (cauliflower, eggplant, zucchini).

What foods do you find kill your hunger quickly? What snacks? I'm fine at meals (5-6oz of protein, then a non-starchy veggies topped with olive oil), but a couple hours later it's NOM NOM NOM. Ack. Do I need to up the protein? Or are super hungry days just part of the process and I shouldn't sweat it?

Stupid Fitday. I shouldn't have looked at it. Now I feel like I need to keep my cals low to compensate today.

Here are some suggestions...

I make a pot of coffee, and have a mug with heavy cream.

If that doesn't work....

Have a big scoop of homemade egg salad.
A big fatty fried porkchop with mayo.
A ribeye steak, grilled, dipped in butter.
About an ounce of cubed muenster (or whatever you like) cheese.
An ounce of heavy whipping cream, whipped, with a pack of sweetnlow.

Hope this helps!
If I can think of anymore I'll add them.
That list usually does the trick for me.

Protein, aka meat, works for me. I find increasing my fat too much also makes me really ravenous.

I don't snack much these days, but having a few olives really help me get by until meal time.

Make lots of soup, I don't mean thick soup though, I mean vege/chicken stock and add in some salt and veges.
Its hot, its nice and sustains hunger.

So too much fat makes you hungrier? That's interesting. I can try to up the protein to see if I'm the same. Everyone talks about fat being satiating, but it really wasn't for me, at least not yesterday.

Samantha, your list made me . Mmmm, steak. With butter.

Slimjen, do you make your own broth? Sounds like I could do that. Do you have to count any carbs for broth if you add veggies but strain them out?

Well, I don't eat meat but I used too, and id just get a chicken carcus or some regular chicken and broil it in a crock, yes unfortuantly I still counted the carbs.. But really, once you have the stock and add some salt you don't need an awful lot of veges.. Id just put some pumkin in it and maybe some cabbage or brussel sprouts.

I am someone who can get turned on by too much fat, like carbs! I have tried to up fat intake, but have enjoyed myself way too much in the process and the calories creeped up. For whatever reason, my body insists on a ratio of 59-60%fat, and when I try to make the fat % higher, I end up eating more of everything else.

I just think the "hungries" are something that are normal and you have to ride through with reasonable caloric indulgence. I sometimes make myself eat something as healthy as it is fatty-ie sardines so that I am somewhat satiated and nourished at the same time. Pate and cheese (danger!) are other favorites.

The only thing that really kills my hunger quickly is nuts. However, if I eat too many, I get nauseous and cannot eat again for hours. I see you're still on induction though, so I'm not of much help. But maybe for down the road....

I don't know why but black coffee suppresses my appetite.

I will eat a raw egg when I get the munchies for no reason. The taste and texture will make you not want to eat anything else, plus it has enough fat and protein to satisfy whatever hunger is there.

I crack it into a cup, put some hot sauce on top to mask the taste, and bottoms up...

Congrats on hitting that 199 mark!

Anyway, pork skins have been helping me. 80 calories a serving, ZERO carbs!

Sugar Free Gum

Sunflower Seeds. I think they're like 2-4 carbs a serving, 200 calories.

I think seeds and gum are not on the induction phase but... it helps me and it is low in carbs.

Devilled eggs kill my hunger right away and they are easy and quick to make. In fact, I just had two of them. I keep boiled eggs in a bowl in the fridge all the time.

I have two hunger killers:
  • Pemmican
  • high-fiber veggies in a high-fat sauce

Pemmican is a huge time sink to make, but a full batch lasts for a month, is very portable, and doesn't require refrigeration.

For veggie sauce, we always keep a coconut-milk curry on hand, plus home-rendered tallow. Occasionally, I'll make Karen Barnaby's faux mashed potatoes, which is veggie + fat all in one package.

Studies indicate that protein satisfies hunger better than the other macronutrients (fat and carbohydrate). When I'm hungry I usually make myself an omelet.
