Protein relieves gout
I was looking at some starvation studies, and I came across this;
Quote:
In two cases of acute
gouty arthritis in this group, specific treatment or
ingestion of protein in adequate amounts resulted
in prompt alleviation of clinical symptoms.

The
hyperuricemia seems to be a result of catabolism
of cells, coupled with a decrease in renal excre¬
tion of uric acid. These experiences would suggest
that obese patients who are known to have gout
should avoid total starvation and also reducing diets
leading to a negative protein balance.

I found this old thread on another forum, doing a search for nitrogen balance and gout;

They used to treat gout with glycine, it increases urinary output of uric acid. I think they got paranoid that the glycine might have been the cause of the uric acid in the first place. I doubt it was a problem, glycine helps with most of the other adverse effects of fructose, at least in rodents.
