Default Here's help, maybe

I am new to this diet, but had problems very similar to yours. First, try supplementing with potassium, it cured my tired spells right up. Are you drinking any soda? Diet soda seemed to make me feel worse. I read in the Carb Addict's book that sugar substitues cause insulin rushes which in turn have a tiring affect and make you feel like you need to eat again. Drink only water and tea. You can sweeten your tea with Stevia that does not seem to affect insulin release. Finally, try eating 45 or more carbs once a day with a balance of protein and fiber on the side (dinner usually) your body may be trying to say it needs to start over with the carb reduction. Reduce your cabs slowly.

Signed

Brenda

P.S. All of the info I gave is straight from help I have gotten from my doc or read online about Hypoglycemia and low carbs.

Thumbs up Potassium

Silence,

My doctor told me I could take up to two a day with a meal. I asked if it was harmful or if it would hurt my weight loss and she said it would not. I have read about potassium and can not find anything unsafe about it. I believe the store sells it in 200mg form. Even if you just take one, you'll feel better. That would be like eating a banana a day (don't eat bananas though) I have never heard that too much potassium is bad, why does your mom think this?

not sure, but when i try to buy potassium i cant find much. the prescription lady tells me anything more than 50mg i would need a prescription to get.

not too thrilled to have to swallow 4 pills to get 200mg of potassium... oh well.

i wander why though...

and i cant find NO SALT. went to health food store, the lady asked me what is that? ....

Sorry, I did not realize you were from Canada. In the U.S. potassium comes in large forms at any super market. Try ordering it online.

The Eades (Protein Power) recommend 99 mg. potassium per day. You should not take it if you are on blood pressure medication because they already contain potassium to counteract their diuretic effect. It causes you to retain water and can be harmful in high doses. It will raise your blood pressure. The reason for taking it is that our high-protein diet causes us to lose too much water and become dehydrated. The potassium will help balance that out, but don't go overboard.

The potassium salts you referred to are Morton Nu Salt (or New Salt?). Anyway, you'll find it next to the regular salt in the grocery rather than in the drugstore or health food store. It has a sort-of tangy flavor.

I'd stick with the Eades recommended 99 mg. instead of taking 200. If you're going to supplement again with Nu Salt, I'd just take a single one of the 50 mg. tablets.

Hope this helps.

Allison

Default potassium

Do you drink lots of water? If you do, it may be depleting your potassium, as well as your sodium levels. When water goes in your cells, sodium and potassium are pushed outside your cells..and therefore excreted from the body as urine, and perspiration. A supplement is a great idea if this is the case. And yes...too much potassium can be harmful. A high potassium level can affect your heart, and muscles. So stick with the recommended dosage and continue to drink the water...that is important too!!! Another question to ask yourself, is how much iron you are taking in. You might want to consider an iron supplement. Iron is what helps the hemoglobin-HgB (oxygen in your blood) bind to your body cells. When the Hgb binds to your cells, it makes you feel less tired...because the cells are properly oxygenated. When people are anemic, the doctor usually prescribes iron tablets ( you can get an over the counter form of this too). Explains why you get tired during a female's time of the month because you are losing blood, and therefore Hgb.

Silence, you can buy potassium in 99 mg tablets. Try a different store.

Default Hi Silence!

Just wanted to add my comment to Karen's. Natural Factors makes an 99 mg potassium tablet. You can find it at just about any health food store.

I've been taking two a day -- one at breakfast, and one before bed with my cal/mag.

I must say though, I'm still not up to where my energy levels were before starting this (nearly seven weeks now), and sometimes aftre lunch all I want to do is sleep! Perhaps more carbs is the answer, but I'm afraid of letting the monster out of the box!!

Default Eades and potassium

Actually the Eades have changed their recommendation for potassium. They now advocate 400mg a day until you reach maintenance. At that time this is what they have to say about it:

Quote:
When can I stop taking potassium ?

When you have reached Maintenance, you can stop your daily intake; reserve extra potassium supplementation for summer months or periods of intense physical activity accompanied by sweating. During these times, you may still wish to take potassium periodically (say, two or three days a week.) If you have been off the regimen for more than a brief "vacation" and are restarting, remember that falling insulin will deplete potassium and you should replace it accordingly.

Important: If you are taking medication for blood pressure or fluid retention, be certain to check with your physician or pharmacist before supplementing with potassium.)

FYI, NuSalt can usually be found in a grocery store in the same place you'd find table salt.
