Default After 1st week of Induction (and trip to emergency room)!!

Well, let me first say that my 1st week of induction ended up with at 7lb, count 'em S.E.V.E.N. pounds that are no longer on my body!! WHOOH HOOO!!!

I literally danced on the scale this morning, all week I wasn't sure if it would work because I could eat so much, and have it taste good to boot! This is not just a WOE it is my new WOL!!

OK, story time, after all the dang water I drink, I ended up in the ER with heart palpitations, never had them before and they scared me because I am only 37 and have had great blood pressure, great cholesterol etc. basically, healthy as a horse!! We were there for 3 hours while they ran blood tests, and after getting poked with a needles 5 times (yes, I said 5!) they found out that I have a urinary tract infection!!

I drink like 2 liters of water plus+ a day! The doc said it could be the shock to my system of changing my diet so drastically. Has anyone else had this happen?

I haven't heard of this happening before. I'm sorry it happened to you.

I think many of us (me included!) have a tendency to attribute all physical changes to our diet, because our change in diet is so radical. But often times, it's just a coincidence.

Anyway, glad you are getting treated for it, whatever the cause, and congrats on your good start with Induction!

I did the first time I did Atikins - I dropped so much so fast that the Drs thought I had created an imbalance in the fluid around my heart - after a year on pills my heart has now picked up it's regular beat again and I'm medication free. I talked with my Dr about starting Atkins again and he just said maybe drop slower this time (which has not been a problem ....sad to say)

Default How's your potassium?

Can't speak to the UTI itself; may have been coincidence, maybe not. If a diaphragm is your method of BC, pay attention to re-sizing it as you lose weight--that WILL matter.

However, with all that water and what appears to be a strict induction, it's also possible your electrolytes are low and that can cause symptoms in some people. Heart arrhythmias have little to do with blood lipids, per se. You may want to supplement your food with lite salt to help replace the potassium you're washing out with all that water.

It could also be that it's just time for your body to display some new facets of growing older.

Good luck.

OK--being a women's healthcare provider for over 10 years, (I have the right and the knowledge) to tell you that the emergency room doctor is an IDIOT!! HELLOOOOOO!!! UTIs are caused by BACTERIA not food. Jeeeeesh! Now if you were having heart palpiataions and feeling week this is most likely IS due to an electrolyte imbalance that may happen when some people start low carbing, lose a large amount of water (along with electrolytes) to quickly. Nothing that a magnesieum and potassium supplement or a no salt sodium alternative used at the dinner table won't cure.

FYI--if you are one of those women who use different bath gels, bubble baths etc, I would recommend that you stop--the bubbling ingredient used (sodium laurel sulfate) disrupts the normal pH of the vagina and urethra making it more likely for the bacteria to adhere to the mucosal lining. thus causing an increased risk for UTI.

Hope you feel better.

Lisa

PS--CS Carver is right. For all you diaphragm useres out there. For every 10 pounds you lose, you need to have your diaphragm refitted!

I had a similar problem 1st week when I lost so much, I figured what it was [too many bathroom trips] and made some potassium SF lemonade with Morton's Lite Salt twice a day which fixed the problem within hours. For me the symptoms were mainly in the mornings or after a meal.

Thanks! I thought it was weird that the doc said that, I used to get them all the time when I was pregnant 15 years ago and haven't has one since, but I always thought they were bacterial. I think it explains why I was so tired & achy this weekend!
I don't have to worry about the BC, no more children happening here! But a great tip! I use a 'special' wash designed for that area (because I used to get them a lot!) I think they work better also and keep you fresher longer!

Still - 7 pounds! I have been a giggly mess all day!!!

Default With all due respect,

Without knowing exactly what was wrapped around what the doctor said, it's hard to say if the intent was idiotic or not.

1. Once it was clear the presenting patient was not at cardiac risk, unfortunately, she became a hindrance. Presumably, the ER was full of other people also in need of some kind of care and at that moment, more at risk of dying. A UTI is rarely a life-and-death emergency, compared to whatever else may be happening in ER at the time.

2. A LC diet will not, in itself, cause a UTI. However, a change in diet (however explained or mis-understood by someone taking notes) can change body chemistry, and that can be what makes someone susceptible to a UTI.

3. We're all awash in the requisite bacteria all the time. How come we're not all down with UTIs then, and how often is it that we get them "at the worst possible time," ie when something else has changed the way our bodies are able to respond?

4. Plenty enough of us know about "honeymoon cystitis," when a sudden change for the better in general sexual activity can lead to a UTI. I can make this story work in my mind, given the starting conditions. It's not exactly diet-related, but it's not not diet related, either, if you're following.

Oh and I forgot to add my palps were in no way related to a UTI - that just sounds crazy

Hi,

I am kind of prone to UTI's for some odd reason. The first day of induction I woke up with one (I hadn't even started eating yet) and the doctor treated me with antibiotics which he failed to tell me I couldn't have with dairy!!! Since I was eating a lot of dairy on my dew diet, the antibiotics were weak and my infection re-emerged at the end of week two. I was feeling mild symptoms during the second week but I think the constant water drinking kept them from getting severe. Anyhow, maybe you aren't hitting the bathroom enough to accomodate your new 2L + of water drinking a day. "Holding it" is another known cause of UTI's!
