Default Nice inspirational article...

...I am working towards adding weight training back into my life. I have not made progress in many months even though I have been in ketosis frequently. Thus, the reason for the change in direction. The weight training crowd despise low calorie eating of any kind and suggest a 40/40/20 split with calories around 500 below maintenance. I am going to try to bulk and cut while in ketosis and lose 1-2 lbs a week. We shall see how it goes. My stress has gone down quite a bit after my wife moved out and the judge granted my divorce. I am primary to my 10 and 11 y.o. daughters which is all I wanted when the ordeal began.

There are quite a few before and after articles on this site but I didn't go searching for any to post here; however, this one was on the front page of the main site and she did quite well.

I've been weight training twice a week for over 5 years. It is very important to me. I love having muscles. I love feeling strong. I love how it makes daily activities easier, such as walking up a flight of stairs, shoveling gravel, or even playing tennis and hiking. I love that it helps insulin resistance.

Yes, I still weigh too much and have failed time and time again with sticking to a healthy way of eating. I'm still working on that.

As far as the lady in the article, all I can say is good for her. It's a little extreme I guess. I just want to be normal and healthy.

My personal trainer and her husband are 'cut' as you put it. But they have balance in their life. They don't have TV, they are renovating their house, and they do lots of activities as a family with their 12 year old twins.

I hope you can find a few hours a week to workout with weights, but also do fun activities with your girls. They are at a fun age and before you know it they will be teenagers who won't want to be seen with ol' Dad!

Best of luck with your journey AuntJoyce and congratulations with maintaining the weight training while pursuing your goal of healthy eating.

I am at the end of *my* rope, so I stepped back and tried to access what I can do to restart my weightloss that has been at a virtual standstill for more than a year. I will try to bulk (build muscle) while on a keto diet *and* cut (lose fat) at the same time. It is not recommended by the weight training crowd but I can certainly try. After 16 years of stress leading to weight control issues, what can it hurt to try something different for six months?

I am very concerned about injuries but consider myself very knowledgeable in weight training, I was quite active in the gym during college and the few years after. A very jealous wife ended my trips to the gym 16 years ago.

But that was then, this is now...

I see what you mean about lose fat/add muscle. I would think that nutritionally, the first priority is to eat like you want to lose fat (LC/Keto fits nicely). But do your weight training. There are lots of opinions out there about how to get fit or do body building in a certain way. Here are two sources I like who really consider the science behind getting fit.

Fred Hahn wrote Slow Burn and has some lively and informative blogs (strong opinions ) about weight training and nutrition.

http://slowburn.typepad.com/

In his Slow Burn book, he teamed up with Dr. Michael Eades and Dr. Mary Dan Eades who wrote Protein Power Lifeplan. PPLP is an informative book to understand how insulin works and why eating low carb and avoiding grains is healthy.

The Eades blog here:

Divorce is tough. I've been through that but did not have kids. Focusing your energy on your fitness and your daughters is the best way to deal with it. And hey, you might meet a gal in the gym who shares your interest in fitness. Good luck!
