Default Let's talk CHOCOLATE

What do you do when you just have a HUGE craving for chocolate????

I am dying for some and can't think about anything else. Are there any good substitutes besides the shakes while on induction?

Has anyone got a recipe for something chocolately made with the chocolate shakes that I can eat (not drink)?

NYET on induction. JUST TOUGH IT OUT. It's only two weeks. (There are recipes for induction-friendly cream cheese with cocoa, frozen into "candy blobs" or something like that, but you'll have to search on your own.)

However, here's info for later. I don't keep chocolate handy, because it's hard to stop. However, for festive occasions:

Belgian Obsession Dark Chocolate--small bars, with four squares--about 170 cals total, maltitol sweetener. I buy these at Walgreen's. I can usually stop with two squares. But beware.

Also, Russell Stover's sugar free chocolate coated mint patties. One of those usually takes care of it.

But I'm a goddess of self-control.

A serious craving for chocolate is very often a magnesium deficiency. Take a magnesium supplement and have something fatty like some cheese or a few macadamia nuts and the craving will most likely pass quickly.

i usually have a piece of the SF dark chocolate from trader joes. it is zero carb, very delicious, and they also have white chocolate and milk chocolate, but it also has the sugar alcohol that makes many people sick. fortunately, it doesn't make me sick. i also like the russel stover's mint patties, there is a new wafer type cookie, and the RS's mint melts. i also get SF peanut MM's from winco foods in the bulk section, but those are hard to moderate so i don't buy them too often. all in all i might eat chocolate a couple times a month maximum, otherwise it would be too easy to get out of control.

Wow, thanks for the tip. I even have some magnesium tabs in my cabinet, but I haven't been taking them. I will begin taking them again. I think I bought them from Atkins in fact, but I never knew just why they were recommended.

and if they have a high carb count i suppose there's no point anyway. ??

The thing about those SF chocolates...

Usually they are sweetened with maltitol, or some other form of "sugar alcohol." So, the label says something like Total carbs 19g. But the sugar alcohols account for most of it. SA's are supposed to have little or no effect on glucose in the bloodstream, and thus are considered non-sugar for diabetics. For low-carbers, it can still have an effect on insulin output, and therefore trigger cravings, etc. In any event, the calories DO count.

I've read that if you DON'T get a case of the runs after consuming sugar alcohols, you're probably digesting it as carbs. They can cause serious setbacks in your ongoing weight loss.

When the chocolate urge hits, I get the 85% cocoa chocolate bars by Lindt. The sugar amount per serving is small and the chocolate flavor is intense (more chocolate flavor than my taste buds know what to do with) so a little bit (slowly melted in my mouth) lasts a long time.

Those are good. Now I use Bakers Bittersweet sometimes, its in the cooking section-- just a bit sweeter than cooking chocolate, 6 net grams per ounce. The last bar took me two months to eat. I doubt if ill buy anymore chocolate, I would rather have the more healthy walnuts!
