Default Canada's Food Guide (our very own version of the USDA 'pyramid'...

So the dang thing hasn't been substantially revised since about 1997, and "they've" been chipping away at it ever since...with a "pause" for the elections so "they" (senior bureaucrats in Ottawa?) can make sure the new Prime Minister doesn't have a different idea based on who-knows-what about what's good for the health of Canadians.... {hmmmm, couldn't that Harper dude use a goodly stretch of quality protein and fats? huh? }

Well, never mind all that. Canada's Food Guide is up for discussion again, and the government invites "your" input -- ok, it invited MY input, but you guys are all very good at this, too, and have something to say, right?

Now's your chance:

Health Canada is pleased to announce that the Food Guide consultation is once again available online, to participate, visit the Health Canada web site at:
http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/ahc-asc/publ.../consult_e.html

The consultation period will run until March 24th, 2006. The
temporary suspension of the consultation due to the federal election has resulted in changes to the food guide revision timelines. The release of the updated Food Guide is now expected in the fall of 2006. For more details on the revision timeline please see:
http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/food-g...l_rev_ga_e.html

Enjoy. And PLEASE do try to have something to say....we don't often have a chance at real input...

I went to the site and gave them as many comments as each of the windows allowed. Someone at HC is going to have a lot of reading to do......

Personally, I think it sucked, still too much emphasis on grains and not enough on healthy fats (there is at least SOME now).

Thanks for posting it Jude!

There's still time, the government's invite for consultation on Canada's Food Guide isn't "closed" until the end of March 24th!

OMG - did you see that they're pushing white bread? They are saying it's because of the folic acid content, and the concern about spina bifida and women of child-bearing age. What on earth happened to the notion of getting it from spinach and:
• 1 cup boiled collard greens: 177 mcg
• 1/2 cup canned chickpeas: 141 mcg
• 1 medium papaya: 115 mcg
• 4 spears steamed or boiled asparagus: 88 mcg
• 1/2 cup steamed broccoli: 52 mcg
• 1 cup strawberries: 40 mcg
• 1 medium orange: 39 mcg
(list from http://www.babycenter.com/refcap/476.html)

Unbelievable. They must have given up on convincing people to eat fruits and vegetables, so now they figure their next best strategy is to encourage white bread and junk cereal instead. Completely missing the unintended consequences they'll get with the continuing wave of obesity and type II diabetes.

These are the same people who have also regulated against carb labelling, so that we can no longer buy LC tortillas, flax cereal, etc. in Canada. I just shake my head.

Sid, you fantastic guy, I hope and pray you sent these same incontrovertible facts to Health Canada! Your opinions are so sound and supported, they can only help..... It's JUST the kind of feedback they desperately need, preferably in VOLUME....!
