Default how many grams of protein?

I got on fitday and was shocked at the no. of grams of protein I had eaten today...cals were about 1,700 protein was about 115!!!! That was from one serving of grouper (fish), a handful of almonds and about 1 cup of pork loin cubes...any wisdom re the amount of protein and fat a low carbing neander should aim for?

Low-carbing and calorie counting don't mix! Somewhere it is recommended that the minimum amount of protein to take daily should be roughly the size of an average hand (whatever size that is) and the amount of fat should be in excess of this amount. The crucial consideration is keeping the carbs very, very, low and certainly no more than can be burned-off in a day. If you are putting on weight then you are probably eating too many carbs (rather than calories).

I don't hold with Duparc's statement at all. Personally, I don't lose weight if I don't watch the calories. Granted, you can "watch" calories without compulsively counting them too. Men lose weight much easier than we do and so to them, not counting calories works... for them. Some women too, but then there are those of us with stubbornly slow metabolisms.

I try to aim for 1g protein for every 1 pound of LBM I have. That's about 105 pounds on me, so 105g is my minimum. Usually I'm in the 115-120g area.

The reason I lean on protein so hard is because it keeps me from losing LBM as I lose weight and it also really quells the appetite which helps with keeping the calories down.

Protein Power (PP) has a big long calculation for minimum amount of protein for you to eat.

Skipping to the good part. Youre doing fine. We are the same height, and you weigh less than me, but i usually aim for 120g protein/day. and thats minimum. you can go over it.

dont know exactly what neaderthin says, but protein power would say that youre fine and to keep it up.

Eating too much fat (with it's high calories) can inhibit weight loss. However, it is important to get ample good fat in one's diet. That, to me, is the contradiction in trying to follow a low-fat/high-carb diet. If you do this, you will not get the benefits found in fat. Cutting carbs helps cut calories, and that will help you lose weight. I wonder if people who have a lot of body fat will be getting benefits from burning their own body fat? I don't know how they will be able to lose weight quickly if they consume a lot of fat. Perhaps the topic of another thread?

fit with lean muscle mass as I ride
my bike about 75 - 100 miles a week.

So... what does 100g of protein equate to? How many oz of meat, say? How bad is it if one goes over the minimum amount they should have?

Minimums are minimums, not maximums. I don't think there's any maximum protein on the plan I follow. Its just limited by my appetite.

One ounce of fresh, raw tuna is 7g of protein. If that is any help.

This is a great thread.
I just looked over my fitday entries for the last couple of weeks and I am well under 100g protein everyday (nearer to 60-70g a day)!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am thinking I need about 105-115 per day, not accurate just a guestimate from ppl w similar heights to me.

Right focus on the protein!!

Here you are:
Quote:
How many grams of protein are in each protein choice?

* Meats, fish and poultry = 7 grams of protein per ounce
* Eggs = 6 grams for a whole egg, 4 grams per egg white
* Hard Cheese (formed) = 6-7 grams per ounce
* Soft Cheese (cream, spreadable)= 3-4 grams per ounce
* Curd cheese (cottage, ricotta) = 7 grams per ¼ cup
* Tofu = 5 grams per ounce

Is it all right to eat more protein than my recommended amount?

Yes, you can eat more protein if you are still hungry, providing you do not have existing kidney disease. Your protein intake needs to be monitored more closely in that situation. The amount depends on the size of your lean body mass, but in general, your Protein Requirement is the right portion size. Remember that early man did not have a predictable food supply-one day he might have a feast and then have nothing for days. Our body is flexibly designed to make use of what it can on an irregular schedule, but spreading intake out more evenly certainly helps to stabilize insulin and blood sugar levels.
