Default Yummy Chocolate Mousse

Hello all: I finally joined up (however I have been lurking in the corner for a while now). Thanks to all for your help, suggestions and great meal tips and ideas - this site is great help and offers much encouragement.

I wanted to share my little chocolate secret that has been getting me through my severe chocco cravings (as I am a choco-holic).

I buy the Dr. Oetker Chocolate Mousse (4g net carbs) I get it at No Frills it is about $1.50 then I throw in a scoop of chocolate protein mix, mix with a cup of milk or cream. I melt (in a double broiler or pan with boiling water with bowl on top) two squares of unsweetened dark cooking chocolate. Pour the melted chocolate into the mousse mix, and beat a little more with your mixer and then let it sit in the fridge.

One night I couldn't wait for the mousse to set in the fridge (I told you I am a choco-holic) so I put it in the freezer - it just so happened I had it in the freezer a little longer than I intended however it turned out great, as I ended up with a made fab tasting chocolate gelato (so this is also yummy frozen).

Welcome! That sounds wonderful, anything that uses the chocolate word that often has got to be good! I'm wondering about Dr. Oetker choc. mousse. Is that in the pudding section of your store? --Gail

Hello Gailew: Yes I have located these little boxes in the pudding isle of the store - the box is about the size of a hand and is dark blue and light blue in colour with a picture of a choccy mousse on the front and back. They have a non low carb version (box looks very similar - so make sure you pick up the LC version). It also comes in two other flavours also(Strawberry and Vanilla), however as mentioned I am a choco-holic so I have only tried the chocolate.

sananda this sound delicious. I will definetly try this. I do have two questions though.
1. What is the size (measurement)of your scoop for the chocolate protein mix. These scoops seem to differ depending on which brand you buy.
2. When you mention cream, what percent cream would that be. I'm just thinking about the carb amount for this. Can you do it with whipping cream.
Thanks for the recipe.

Hello Mumof4boys: I wouldn't be too fussy about ruining this mousse as it is very easy to fix up consistency wise with either a bit more milk or whipping creme if it is too stiff, or a bit more protein mix if it is a big to runny.

The instructions are on the back of the box - so before purchasing you can read the instructions too. However, I use a scoop of mix from the GMC shop - my brand is Iso Pro. A scoop is probably around two tablespoons for my brand, and
yes you can do it with whpping creme it will give it a lovely consistency and taste.

I checked at my store and the choc. mousse mix that they have contains trans fats, so too bad for me...I consider that stuff poison. I believe it would be beneficial to the planet if it was outlawed. They have some of the Dr.'s mousse but not low carb. I did make some mousse the other day with avacado. It's one of Karen Barnaby's recipes. It's in her book but I don't know if it's in the recipe section in this forum. It's healthy and yummy, so I guess I'll stick to that.I lost weight the day I had that, and was sure I would be gaining, it's so rich! Actually, it wasn't chocolately, but I could add it...Think I feel some messing with a good recipe coming up....

Well, I just made Karen's recipe of Avacado Espresso Mousse and added 2 oz. meltedchocloate to it, plus 1 Tbs dutch choc. powder. I have made it into 8 servings instead of 6 to keep the carb count down. If I do it again, I'll add a tad more of the sweetener. It should be around 4 carbs a serving that way. And healthier than packaged mousse with the avacado and the mascarpone cheese. I may submit this to Karen's site because she probably has a better idea than I do on how to best make this into a great chocolate mousse.

a technical little question - i've yet to try Dr.'s mixes, but I've noticed that they contain partially hydrogenated coconut oil/palm oil. since these oils are already almost completely saturated, how many trans fats could be formed anyway?? maybe we're worrying about a teensy-weensy dose? anyone want to comment on my 'theory?'. this isn't a trans fat debate...I think we all agree they are bad, but i'm wondering if this product isn't as dangerous as it seems...

Not sure - it does say sats but zero to trans. No question about it - these fats aren't the greatest I guess, but if its a once in a while treat then I wouldn't sweat it too much. However, if its something your concerned about I would say use your freedom of choice, walk past it and purchase something else that does resonate with you a little better.

I bought the Dr. Oetker at Bulk Barn yesterday. I just made it with whipping cream and 1 cup was way too thick so I added more cream. Not sure how much more I added but I did lick the bowl after putting the Mousse into dessert cups and wow this is really good.
With regards to the coconut oil, from what I have been hearing lately, this is one of our best oils to be using. Check out Dr. Mercola's web site for info on this. www.mercola.com
I have also seen info on this in Canada on a show called Balance. I now use coconut oil to cook with instead of Canola oil which apparently does have some Trans Fats in it due to the fact that the oil has to be heat treated so it won't go rancid.

Oh I have seen that show balance a few times - it is a really good show. I've enjoyed it the times I have caught it on TV, very informative on health and alternative/wholistic living. I looked up the ingredients before posting as I too am concerned about trans fats (but it listed the trans fats as 0 on the box). I also found out some sites saying coconut oil is very good and read was the gonglomerates in the food industries that where spinning that it was not good for you - so they could use switch to the cheeper trans fats. I guess nothing surprises me these days :-)

Thank goodness I am not the only person who licked the bowl while making this :-)) Hope it turns out mumof4boys.
