Default The flu has taught me an unforgettable lesson....

I am just barely alive after having contracted a bubonic plague like flu...I slept for most of the day yesterday and at lest this morning I feel like I can walk around. The shivering and sweating are down to. So what on earth does this have to do with low-carbing you may ask?

Well the last week I have been back on induction level carbs sliiming down for an audition next week. It's been going really well, I adore induction for the lack of hunger, cravings etc.

So when I got sick I really had to pull myself in to not reach for the ice cream, pasta or comfort food. I had miso soup, turkey breast, shrimp, and dome cucumber. Lots and Lots of green tea. So i figured this morning would be at least a pound down-all that shivering must have burned some calories right" So wrong. I gained 9 pounds. The flu makes you gain weight? No. But nyquil sure does. There's no nutritional info listed on the bottle or the box. I knew it had sugar but decided that feeling better was more important that being slim. I didn't know it had 19 grams of sugar per serving! And having gone a bit overboard in my pursuit of comfort that means pver the day I consumed 120 grams of carbs that I knew nothing about...

Ah well, I did it to myself and it'll come back off. But still a funny story to tell the grandkids.

Cheers, Em

Ouch! Hope you're feeling better. I doubt all that weight gain was from the Nyquil. You might have some water retention from the sugar, and you might have a bit of the big "C" from not eating your usual amount of veggies...

My b/f has the flu, too, and was up all night with a bad fever. I'm chomping back echinaceae and vitamin C - I don't want it!

I think I remember hearing a recent refutation of the old "Drink plenty of water" when you're sick wiht flu and cold, because you become a giant sponge and drinking more water will make it worse. I just think water retention is a symptom of being sick.

I hope you feel better! Good for you for staying the course when you're feeling so rotten.

Em - I just got over a one month bout of what you describe. I had been doing great prior to that. I really wasn't sticking to plan obviously and taking NyQuil, cough "stuff", etc. I too went up about 9 pounds, but started back as of Monday of this week and am down 5 already. I think a lot of it was water, as I did feel "puffy." Definitely the sugar bases in the medicines, etc.

I was laughing though at your post - the thought of the flu making you gain weight.... You always hear most people lose weight when they're sick - go figure, right?

Jump back in their with determination and I think you'll be pleasantly suprised in the next few days.

Next time, buy the Nyquil/Dayquil in pill form. One of them at least has very little sugar in it, might even be both. IH don't have any in the house right now to check. The syrup is loaded with sugar to make it taste good. With pills, taste is not a concern, so they typically have less sugar or none. Shop around and read labels.

I have both the Dayquil/Nyquil tablets in my hand and neither list any sugar as an ingredient. I absolutely can't stand the taste of the liquid stuff so have used the tablets long before I worried about carbs. Just went through having a bad cold and used both with no ill effects.
