Default my experiences with low carb products

i decided to make this thread after buying the atkins brand bbq sauce today at no frills, and being completely disgusted and disappointed with it...it tastes like dishwater...so,i'll break my experiences down into categories

HORRIBLE

- atkins brand bbq sauce

-carb options ranch dressing...(has gross aftertaste, tastes nothing like ranch whatsoever)

-ben and jerry's carb karma vanilla swiss almond ice cream (really dry, doesnt taste like icecream, has weird taste)

-PORKY'S brand pork rinds..had a nasty aftertaste...it tasted stale

EDIBLE,BUT NOT GREAT
atkins advantage bars:
-almond brownie (best one of the advantage bars, still not great)
-cookies n cream (didnt like this one,no flavour, just dry and chalky)
-peanut (ok,not great)
-coconut (not bad,edible)
-parliens and cream (its ok,wouldnt buy it again)
-mocha (edible,wouldnt buy it again)

-atkins cherry syrup (edible, wouldnt buy it again)
it would be ok on desserts, but not as a drink with water or club soda added...i wont buy it again....i wonder if anyone tried the strawberry or chocolate?

-low carb wraps from THE LOW CARB GROCERY(yonge lawrence) (they were pretty good, but made me stall, had a very slight sour aftertaste, but werent bad,i would've bought them again if they didnt make me stall)

-chocolate cake (sold by the slice at THE LOW CARB GROCERY) the cake part had no flavour, like it didnt taste sweet at all..the chocolate icing on top was good...

-sugar free gummie bears (sold at 7/11)
they were hard, not soft and chewy like the real thing...but for someone who must have it,they were edible..i woudlnt buy it again

-atkins endulge peanut wafer..its was ok,i wouldnt buy it again

VERY GOOD

-carb options bbq sauce...tastes really good

-carb options crunchy peanut butter ( tastes really good, but has hydrogenated vegetable oils)

-carb options blue cheese dressing ( not good as a salad dressing, but great as a wing dipp,or dip for celery sticks...tastes just like the blue cheese they sell at any pizza pizza or other wing places)

-atkins endulge caramel nut chew (the chocolate covered one...there is another one with a similar name, but it isnt chocolate covered,i havent tried that one)
this is my fave low carb chocolate bar..it makes me stall but when i absolutely cant do without chocolate i treat myself with this...they sell it at 7/11 too.....

-chocolate walnut cake (sold by the slice at THE LOW CARB GROCERY)
very rich and good, and tastes much better than the plain chocolate cake

-atkins wraps at subway...i tried the turkey breast and ham with cheddar...with all the veggies and mayo..it was great,i stalled (meaning no loss that day) but once in awhile its fine...tastes really good

-BAKEN-ETS (LAYS brand pork rinds) both the regular and bbq flavour taste good..no aftertaste

thats all i can think of for now...please put down your own experiences,so others can learn from it...thanks

i bought them at zellers before, at victoria park and eglinton.....(they were clipped up with the big grab chips like doritos...etc beside the chocolate bars near the cashier..) but they dont always have them....

i also bought them at walmart at eglinton and warden....the LAYS logo is hard to see....but they are yellowin with brown writing i think..and it says BAKEN-ETS ,i only saw the regular one at walmart..not the bbq....i've seen the bbq at zellers...hope that helps...and it says 1.29 on it just like other big grab chips

I look forward to trying carb options bbq sauce... It would be good to get a great sauce for ribs...

Have you tried any of the sugar free Jones Sodas??

Almost all of the sugar alcohol, "tol" based products cause slowdowns or stalls. The best of the bars before I discovered this were the Odessy series.

Of all the LC prepared products I have found to keep me on target and enjoy the meals that I have are ...

Davinci Syrups for cooking and general flavors
The Walden Farms sweetened syrups, toppings and jams (0 carb, 0 Calorie) and taste great.
Atkins Pancakes (a double order is 6 ECC)

Of the natural Low Carb foods that enhance this way of eating ...
Golden Flaxseed (free)
Decorticated Sesami Seeds (almost free, great in baking)
Small Zucchini (great bargain and pick up most flavors ~ .3 ECC for 6")
Cabbage (a great carb bargain 1/4 of a large head for 8 ECC)

Hi Ceelo,

I originally purchased Jones Sodas in the US. I go their for work. They have a diet Cherry Soda that is awesome.... and a really good diet Root Beer.

In Canada, I have only been able to find the Diet Ginger Ale. They are available at most Starbucks, and they are pricey. I have heard that they are also available at 7-11 stores.

I wish I could buy this stuff by the case somewhere.

btw: All of the diet Jones Sodas are sweetened with Splenda...

here's the things i've tried:

atkins canned shakes: They were pretty decent, though i didnt like the texture much. I like the chocolate one best.
Atkins powdered shakes: they were all disgusting.
atkins advantage bars: I have tried a couple kinds, they were *ok*, but they did taste mighty "artificial" to me...
atkins endulge peanut butter cups: didn't like these much at all, a lot because of the digestive upset from the sugar alcohols.
atkins endulge carmel nut chew: tasted good, but again didnt like the sa's
atkins bbq sauce: tasted pretty good , though the texture wasnt much to my liking.
atkins teryaki sauce: Liked it better than the bbq sauce but still the texture wasnt right.
carb options ketchup style sauce: tasted same as normal ketchup to me, though i don't have the worlds greatest tastebuds i am told lol and my roomate thinks it is gross.
carb options origional bbq sauce: good stuff.
carb options hickory bbq sauce: not as good as the other, but still pretty good.
carb options skippy peanut butter: i didnt buy this, my roomate did...it tastes just like normal "junk" peanut butter to me...i didnt like it both because of the taste, and the hydrogenated oil. There are way better all natural ones sold (i like adams best) that taste better, and arent bad for you.
carb options iced tea mix: I couldnt tell the difference between it, and the normal iced tea mix sold. I much prefer my homemade iced tea though made with splenda.
carb options pasta sauces: i tried one of the tomatoe based ones, and a alfredo sauce, i didnt like either AT ALL, they were disgusting imo, and most of them were dumped down our garberator
dreamfeilds pastas: i only had a bite of what my roomate made...tasted like regular past to me, so once i reach goal i will probably eat this more often.
Healthy way carb conscious bread: I had half a slice, and it was actually very good imo as far as commercial breads go.
carb options salad dressings: SO GROSS!!! there are so many other better tasting salad dressings sold that are just as low in carbs.
Atkins morning start cereal: I had the almond one, i suppose it was "ok", but i really was never big on breakfast cereal, and i wouldnt be upset in the slightest if it never could pass my lips again!
atkins pancake syrup: was quite good i thought. i know lots of people find it "watery", but i don't, after all real maple syrup is just as thin in texture.
Ross chocolate bars: They all taste good, but i can't handle the maltitol.
Dempsters low carb bread: Gross....
Watch'n carbs bread: Simply disgusting.
Breyers vannila low carb ice cream: I couldnt stand this stuff and the sa's killed me.
Champman sugar free ice creams: Tried all types, and they all are good tasting, but I cannot handle the sa's so only homemade for me now.
Sugar free jones: I've only seen ginger ale, pink grapefruit, cherry, and cream soda types. They all taste great imo. (i get them at garden market iga's).
Diet crush: Only can get the orange kind around here, and it tastes fine to me, but i try to limit it because of the sodium content etc.
Atkins banana bread mix: I didnt make it according to directions. I added unsweetened chocolate, used butter instead of oil, used half sour cream and half cream (plus a little more) instead of the water, and added some splenda and sugar twin, and added some vannilla, and grated lemon rind, and some chopped almonds, and some extra baking powder. then made a frosting out of butter, sf chocolate, cream, cream cheese, and vannilla. Tasted good that way.
Carb options marinades: Both work great for stir frys.

I have had diet grape crush before whilst traveling, but I didnt like it. However I never did like grape soda in any form, the same goes for most cream soda (except for some reason i like the jones one). Diet mountain dew and diet mug root beer were sweetened with aspartame last time I drank them, but its possible they changed their formulation?

And you are very welcome.

Default lc foods I have tried

The Voortman's no sugar added oatmeal cookies are pretty good. They are kind of high on carbs - 4 net carbs per cookie, but they taste good, and no trans fats. I like to have one to dunk into my tea.

Cherie.

For a time, the splenda-sweetened diet Crush in any flavour was only available in Ontario and I *think* also the Maritimes. Now I hear folks in BC say it's starting to show up there too .. so hopefully it'll be available everywhere soon.

Anybody else remember Hire's Root Beer? It used to be made by the Crush company, and the diet version was sweetened with splenda. I loved it. But in 2000, Crush Canada Inc was bought out by Coca Cola Ltd ... Coca Cola had just released Barq's root beer back then, so you can imagine it didn't take long for them to eliminate the competing product I was so disappointed. Haven't found a diet root beer that I like since then.

My experiences with low carb products (i.e. frankenfoods)
  • Dreamfields pasta - Absolutely fabulous. I despise soy, in anything and in any amount. I cannot handle the flavor. This pasta truly tastes like the real thing.
  • Carborite cereal bars - I have only had the strawberry and the cinnamon bun flavors. Both are wonderful with coffee in the morning. I went back and bought out the selection at K-Mart.
  • Carbquik baking mix - I just tried this recently. Not bad. I made a turkey pot pie and used this mix for a crust. Pretty tasty.
  • Atkins shakes, bake mixes, ice cream, and bars - 'Nuff said
  • Ross bars - I have only had the Milk Chocolate bar but I love them. I can only tolorate half a bar, however.
  • Keto's Apple Cinnamon Hot Cereal - Nasty nasty stuff.
  • Hood Carbcountdown 2% Milk - Very good. I only use it for cooking. Makes great hot chocolate!
  • Yoplait (sp?) yogurt - Not bad. Has a slightly funky taste but the texture is okay. Definately edible.
  • Progresso Carb Monitor soup - Great!
  • Betty Crocker low carb Corn Bread Mix (I can't think of the exact name) - Fabulous!
  • Betty Crocker low carb chocolate muffin mix - Edible, but I threw the rest out. Too many carbs in a product that I didn't really enjoy . Had a strong AS taste.
Just my 2 cents.

I'm in saskatchewan, and I am able to find diet orange crush in almost any grocery store. Though the other two types I haven't come across.

Yup I remember diet Hire's, it was the only diet root beer I'd not get nauseous from.

Hi

It's nice to see locally purchase-able products being broken down here, thanks!

I found Dempsters bread to be pretty good for a locarb bread, toasted only...

As well, I grab any locarb wraps I can find as a great substitute for sandwiches, as well as quesadillas, fajitas, yum. I have the Dempsters Carbwise in the freezer right now, I grabbed all the packages that were left in my local Dominion, since I have never seen them in Dominion before!

We threw out the Atkins Morning Start cereal, I would rather eat carbs.

Chapmans sugar free Neopolitan ice cream was great in my opinion, but the vanilla section had no flavour. Luckily it was surrounded by chocolate and strawberry, which had flavours. Anyway, I have always had *reactions* to sugar alcs, so I eat the ice cream after a meal, and I have about 1/3 of what Iwould have eaten in the past, about half a scoop. It is just a treat.
