Default to cashew or not to cashew

HI everyone,

I have a question. I looked up cashews on the carb counting tool available through the web site, it listed cashews as being absurdly high in carbs.

Can anyone give me a definitive answer? I'd like to keep these as a snack, better than chips for me right now.

any advice is appreciated.
thanks

8 grams net per ounce.

Pecans are a much cheaper alternative with 1 net per ounce. http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts-001-02s02ey.html

Default Cashews aren't nuts

They're a different part of a plant, just feel like nuts in your mouth. When you're "clean," carb-wise, test: chew a cashew. Chew an almond or walnut or other "real" nut (NOT a peanut). Cashews will be MUCH sweeter, and that sweet taste = carbs. (Part of the reason they're usually cheaper than other nuts--they're easier to grow.)

The only nut not advocated on Atkins. I agree-they are soooo good. But, they are sweet too. I think if you check the label they have less fiber than other nuts = higher net carb count.

Ok guys, I wish I hadn't bought those two cans. Guess I will have to give them away today. Thanks for the thread. Marty

As long as you stay within your carb count, then it is okay to still eat them. I like the mixed nuts and it has cashews in them....that tends to reduce the carb count, since I am eating the other nuts at the same time. So it evens out. And heck...they are sooo yummy, I don't think I would give them up.

Almonds and walnuts are your best choices. Macadamias if you have the money. I do eat some peanuts and sunflower seeds as well.

Thanks for the nut info. They are undoubtedly my biggest weakness.

I eat lots of almonds and they work well for me and I continue to lose weight, however, I have stayed away from cashews (even though I LOVE them).

I OD'd on cashews yesterday - ate the whole can! But I just cut back on the carbs for the rest of the day and I didn't gain this am. I won't do it again - I just won't buy them as I know now that they are a binge trigger. I'll stick to walnuts and pecans. Does anybody freeze their pecans and eat them frozen? It gives them a candy feel.

I do a lot of baking especially during the holidays and I keep all my nuts in the freezer. I was told they would last in there forever. When I am feeling brave I will grab a handful. They are great right out of the freezer.

Default Frozen pecans

I have two pecan trees--one's 4' across--and I'll freeze the whole nuts to kill any bugs that might be in them until I can shell them. Never noticed a problem.

Yes, I love pecans out of the freezer.
Unfortunately for me, if I eat any, I'm inclined to go back for seconds, then thirds, etc. I've gone completely without any nuts for the last three days and I've finally started to lose weight again *was stuck for the past 10 days).

thanks for all the replies...I thought I was the only one on a 'nut binge'...well, not a binge, but you know...

*looks over at the two cans bought yesterday*
*sheepish*
