Low carb bars are, of course, inanimate, so they are neither friend nor foe. They are just one more choice that we have that may help in keeping our carb intake at our target levels.
Like all things we eat, they need to be consumed in moderation, and they should never be thought of as being whole food, just a useful substitute when you are in a situtation where you cannot easily get whole food for a meal.
To me, it is better to have a high protein bar when it is time for me to eat, than it is to go without eating at all, or by falling back on some kind of junk food that is higher carb count. YMMV
I also find that there are actually better eat-on-the-go choices, like homemade beef jerky, raw nuts of most kinds, and slices of good, hard cheese, or some fresh popped microwave pork rinds. But, those choices take much more preparation, pre-planning, and availabilty of the good stuff.
Sometimes that does not work out, and a good, low carb bar is the best thing I have at the moment. This is usually when I am driving for several hours, or when I am working on the road, and things get a little out of control so I don't get done on time, and don't get to my next real food meal by the time I need to be eating. So, I eat a bar, and keep going.
My wife and I typically buy one box of Advantage bars, and one box of Endulge bars at Sam's on our monthly shopping trip. The Advantage has 11g of fat, and 18g of protein in each bar, along with 11g of fiber, and 11g of sugar alcohols, but no sugar. While the fiber and the sugar alcohols are a problem for some, they don't seem to bother me much so long as I don't go over 2-3 bars per week, and always have a good whole food meal at the next opportunity.
The Endulge bars are more of a snack or dessert treat when eating a meal, and have much less protein, and somewhat less fat. But tasty and satisfying in certain situations. My wife tends to use them for lunch at work, or when she has to work late.
They seem to be working for us, but a better solution would be if we made something similar at home, and avoided the bars altogether, IMO. But it is our organization and planning skills that are good or bad, not the bars. IMHO, of course!
