Question Help! Low carb bars- Friend or foe?!

I finally started to find LC products in OZ and started trying a variety of LC bars. The problem is that I think (know) I was consuming way too many and got to the stage where they were basically all I was eating.
Anyway, the point is that I think they may have stopped me from losing weight?? I got caught up in the (deceiving?) nett carb idea and was able to stay under 20 nett carbs a day. I was eating about 1200-1400 cal a day. The bars were:

Myoplex Cookies & Cream: 254 cal, 6g total fat, 29g protein, 2g NETT carbs. (total carbs 20g)

Musashi P20 Choc Bar: 226cal, 4.7g total fat, 20.8 protein 3.8g NETT carbs. (total carbs 15.7g)

Sarah Cabbot Guilt Free Chocolate Bar: 182 cal, 4.25g total fat, 22.5g protein, 3.5g carbs (total). IS THIS POSSIBLE?!?!

Has anyone had any similar experiences or theories or ideas or comments?! What carbs do I count?!

I subtract all sugar alcohols and fiber from total carbs to get the net carbs. The SA and fiber won't get absorbed by your body, so they really don't count.

Hi Cheska,

Products with sugar alcohols are responsible for many, many people stalling.

Just try searching this site for "sugar alcohols" and you'll see where many members have found this.
If you click here you'll find more info about them.

IMHO they are best to be kept for occasional use only.

They are truly crap - expensive, shitty-tasting candy bars. Make something homemade for emergencies.

Sugar alcohols are absorbed by the body. Just at a slower rate, but they are still absorbed as carbs. Malitol has a high glycemic index and is basically like eaitng rice. Very gas inducing rice.

I've been eating Atkins bars for breakfast sometimes since I started. But they aren't food, I must say. I find they work for me on the go, but can't compare to a nice steak and salad. Eat more real food and see what a difference it makes.

Low carb bars are, of course, inanimate, so they are neither friend nor foe. They are just one more choice that we have that may help in keeping our carb intake at our target levels.

Like all things we eat, they need to be consumed in moderation, and they should never be thought of as being whole food, just a useful substitute when you are in a situtation where you cannot easily get whole food for a meal.

To me, it is better to have a high protein bar when it is time for me to eat, than it is to go without eating at all, or by falling back on some kind of junk food that is higher carb count. YMMV

I also find that there are actually better eat-on-the-go choices, like homemade beef jerky, raw nuts of most kinds, and slices of good, hard cheese, or some fresh popped microwave pork rinds. But, those choices take much more preparation, pre-planning, and availabilty of the good stuff.

Sometimes that does not work out, and a good, low carb bar is the best thing I have at the moment. This is usually when I am driving for several hours, or when I am working on the road, and things get a little out of control so I don't get done on time, and don't get to my next real food meal by the time I need to be eating. So, I eat a bar, and keep going.

My wife and I typically buy one box of Advantage bars, and one box of Endulge bars at Sam's on our monthly shopping trip. The Advantage has 11g of fat, and 18g of protein in each bar, along with 11g of fiber, and 11g of sugar alcohols, but no sugar. While the fiber and the sugar alcohols are a problem for some, they don't seem to bother me much so long as I don't go over 2-3 bars per week, and always have a good whole food meal at the next opportunity.

The Endulge bars are more of a snack or dessert treat when eating a meal, and have much less protein, and somewhat less fat. But tasty and satisfying in certain situations. My wife tends to use them for lunch at work, or when she has to work late.

They seem to be working for us, but a better solution would be if we made something similar at home, and avoided the bars altogether, IMO. But it is our organization and planning skills that are good or bad, not the bars. IMHO, of course!

My solution has been to think of the Advantage bars as having 10g of carbs. It was way to easy to eat one as a snack if I considered them 2g apiece, so thinking of them as 10g forces me to account for the sugar alcohols.
Food for thought.

For me they cause me to stall. I was eating them and not losing any weight, however when I stopped eating them my weight came off easily. Plus I have a hard time eating just one so I bypass them in the grocery store now. Good Luck!

Here at my office the girls at work consider going on the atkins diet as going out and buying the bars and eat them between breakfast and lunch.

Hi

I don't know if they stall me, but I have never eaten more than one a day. You're definitely in trouble if you are eating only the bars. Part of Atkins or any diet is to begin eating healthy. Eating artificial food all day, every day, probably got most of us to where we had to come here!

Eat a max of one per day. It works for my girlfriend just fine!

I find them to be my friend if eaten in moderation. Used only for on the run, in the car, in a pinch situations where I just CANNOT cook or carry around fridge food. I always have a few Advantage bars in the cupboard or one in my purse. Better to eat one on occassion, than to fall off and eat high carb because nothing convenient is on hand.

The bars usually seem to cause a stall in me. Any kind of bar really. Almonds too, darn it. Atkins muffins stall me or bump me up a couple usually.

I did try something new this weekend, I think they were carb smart by Klondike, chocolate bars. Oh my god were they good. I haven't had ice cream in so long, I couldn't help myself, I had 4 of them that night. Tasted as good as a regular Klondike bar.

I'd been at 240 for almost two weeks. Three days after eating the bars, I'm down to 235, so I would guess they didn't stall me!
