Default New Lowcarber On Board Matey!

Ok I hope I'm posting this in the right place! Just wanted to introduce myself to everyone on Active Low Carber.
Diagnosed Type 2 Diabetic (it will be a year exactly May 22nd 2003). I have always been a big person from a baby on up and with each successive low fat/low cal diet the numbers climbed each time I freaked out from the severe restriction and ate my way back up.
After being diagnosed T2D I went back on my typical diet and have a terrible time controling it.
One day while seeing my nutritionist she told me "DON'T worry so
much about the fat and calories but worry more about the CARBS!". Wow what a concept! I always thought low carbing was for weirdos after hearing all the tripe horror stories about how dangerous it was etc.
Even my old doctor (got a new one!) for years told me "everything converts to sugar so it doesn't matter WHAT you eat" and blamed my weight on me! He told me low carb was unsound eating.
I married a Scientist and he explained the why the concept of low carbing works also. It really made sense! So I have been on it
for several months now and have started at 500 pounds, the biggest I have EVER been and lost 33 (as of today that is) but have just been stuck for weeks and it really sucks:-(
Hope I can get the numbers climbing down. This has been the first time in my life I haven't felt deprived on a diet.
I'm not going to lie, I want spagetti and pizza. Those are the two things I like the most. I don't "crave" them, I really enjoy them.
Giving up the bread (except for occasional ultra low carb bread)
candy and bakery hasn't been bad, or rice and noodles.
My husband and one of my two sons are ultra thin and can eat all the carbs they like and don't gain and ounce!
Its amazing what they can eat and it never affects them at all.

I see that quite a few people on here see thier being fat as being
"ugly" or puts them in loser status. I never saw myself that way
as an adult and would usually start a diet more for my health and family history than to get down a size by Christmas or to make someone else happy with me.
I think you have to start out being ok with yourself. I'm more into
"CARB bashing" than "FAT bashing" since truely people having trouble with carbs can be any size.
Lets seeeeee....biggest problem? Daily exercise, just can't do it!
I get exercise about 3 times a week, I KNOW I really need to do some at least everyother day but it seems life gets in the way of it! I always have some errand or something or someone demanding my attention.
Maybe more exercise would get the numbers moving? I am switching to Diet Rite Cola for soda. Someone here told me that would be better for me.
I don't sweeten with Nura Sweet anymore. I do drink coffee, sometimes I do splurge on pizza or spagetti, its never more than one meal once a week and its not a "bonus" for being good, its just one evening I get to eat what the family all eats and I enjoy it.
Well wow, I guess I did take this introduction thing to heart:-)
I'm 38, married, two kids, live in the country, an active at home Ebayer to make my pin money and have 4 cats and a black Lab!
Whew well thats all for now, I'm going to start a journal tomorrow
if I can figure out how.
Bye All!

Wink Thanks!

Thanks Talon!

Wow you have quite a variety of animals also! Seems you are doing really well on the low carbing yourself.
Today I was going to start my journal but will most likely wait till tomorrow when hubby and the kids are at school.
Did take a mile walk (total) this morning when everyone was sleeping. I like to be alone when I walk. Exercise...I KNOW if I did more I might break this holding pattern in my wieght loss .

Question, how do you keep your cats away from the fish;-)
Mine would be terrible and worry the poor thing to death.

Have a great rest of the weekend!
Nibby

LOL, I think you are the first person to ever ask about the fish. Usually it is the birds. The gold fish has been with me about 3 years, he is actually older than any of the cats. The top to the tank is sealed, so the worse the cats can do is stare.... you should see the birds get beak pressed against the glass while they stare at the fish... almost with the expression of "What's THAT?!" ...or.. "He's drowning Mom!"

Yeah, I wouldn't advise small birds with cats. My birds amazons and larger (16 inches to 3 feet) - the cats don't mess with, but the little birds? The cats have their very own BirdTV.

He's only about 1 3/4 feet if you take away his tail.

Hi Nibby. Welcome. You mentioned you are a Type 2 Diabetic. Diabetes runs in my family (my Mom and my g-ma on my fathers side).

I'll be interested to see how you progress. I'll drop in and read your journal. Good luck.

Dawn

Default Hi 2 Fat and Froggirl

Thanks for the encouragement! If you ever need any I have two shoulders:-)

Froggirl, wow you have just about everything my bestfriend has!
She has the same medical issues that she is battling with.

I cheat also! I can't ever go without mashed potatos or spagetti or pizza again in my life so I have one of them once a week.
I pay for about two hours afterward when I get on my diabetic high and find everything toooo funny. After that I crash and am super tired and cranky but its in the evening so I go to bed.
My youngest (12) even knows the one meal I cheat on a week because of the way I act. Last Friday ate pizza and was all weirf and giggly. He said "ate too many carbs mama?" he knows me too well:0)
Having a supportive man in your life helps and my husband is really good about everything. He is really easy going (unlike me
sometimes).

Going to make a journal entry today. Its rainy and not much else to do right now
take care all!

PS I love frogs, they are super cute!
Are they easy to handle?

Default Hi Dawn!

Welcome also to this site. I have only been here a few weeks and it helps to log in here each day.
I think my family gets tired of hearing about diabetes and low carbing but the more I talk and think about it the least likely I will be to go back to the old way of eating.

I'm glad your jumping on the bandwagon before you become type 2 diabetic. It will stave it off with this way of eating.

Does your family have complications from the diabetes?
Take care!
