I put on my sneakers and had a run/walk yesterday in the park. It was great--but I feel it this morning. Be well everyone.

No one is more surprised than I am that I'm "down" today! Although it seems like I'm lying around a lot at the lake house on the weekend, apparently I'm getting more activity than I realize -- putting the boat in/out of the water, walking my poochies up all those hills, etc. And I'm completely unplugged when I'm there so I have no idea what my FitDay has to say about what I'm eating.

Here's to good numbers for everyone this week!

Something that I do, that gets me around the ups and downs of what my weight might be on any given Monday, is instead record my lowest weight from the previous week. Although I weigh myself each morning, I've been consistently posting each week's lowest weight since almost the beginning of my joining this weigh-in, which was well over a year ago. That helped me to not be so scale anxious- which is something I personally needed to get away from in maintenance. It also gives me a much clearer picture of what I "really" weigh, since over the course of a week I can fluctuate 4 pounds. I've learned that my weight is actually really consistent, though, and has even gradually gone down, since I now have 70 plus weeks of recording my lowest weight each week. I know some people instead post their average weight for the week, which is also a good way to do it, I'm just too lazy to do the math each week! I guess I could be tough on myself and instead post my highest weight for the week- but that's no fun!

Debbie

I'm seriously thinking of increasing my goal weight to 130. When I first started LCing, about six years ago, my goal was 125. Then I re-evaluated and dropped my goal weight to 120, which I once achieved about 20 years ago, after months of stringent low-cal dieting (too bad I didn't know about LC then). That was my lowest weight as an adult.

Now I'm thinking of readjusting my goal to a weight that is higher than what I'd prefer, but probably more realistic in terms of what my now-older body seems to prefer. Six years of LCing and a couple of years of regular exercise have brought me to the high end of a healthy BMI, where I have pretty well "stuck." I did manage to get down to 123 last September, after months of restricting both carbs and calories, but I quickly regained about five pounds after I stopped counting calories. Some people report major appetite loss on LC, but I can't feel comfortable on less than about 1500 cals per day - I get lightheaded, uncomfortable, and HUNGRY.

So I've been thinking ... is it really worth restricting myself to less than 1200 cals a day for months, obsessing and feeling yucky much of the time, maybe losing a pound a month or so, only to regain them as soon as I resume "normal" (LC) eating? No ... didn't think so.

So I'm considering adjusting my goal to 130, which would mean I hit goal a couple of years ago, without even noticing it. This seems a bit odd, but it wouldn't be the first time in my life I've hit a major milestone and didn't realize it till years later.

I have mixed feelings. On one hand, increasing my goal to 130 feels like giving in. On the other, keeping it at 120 will just frustrate me, because, despite my best efforts over many years, I can't get there.

Long ramble. What do you guys think ... feedback, anyone?

Rachel

Hi Rachel-
I'm with you. It helped me to read Dr. Schwartzbein's books- she talks about trusting your body to find the right weight. For me, 125 is maintainable with little effort and I can eat 'normally' for me. To be thinner than that I'd have to restrict, or work out a lot more, and I don't want to do that. For me it is cost/benefit. [The whole idea of a goal weight mystifies me anyway- I just started this to see what happened if I lost 20 lbs, and just felt so good I kept on going.] Now almost 4 years later....
My body seems to like it here, so this is where I stay. It sounds like your body likes a certain place, too.

I'm right there with you rachel and I agree with Eno.

I picked the high end of my weight range for the exact same reason that you are wanting to raise your goal now...I know that I would not be able to maintain a lower weight so why put myself in a state of mind that would have me feeling like I'm always failing!!

I once was 136 for about 15 minutes!! and all I got from people was that I was way too thin. This was 30 yrs ago. Now that I'm in my 50s(yikes)....I am finally in a place where I'm OK with my weight just where it is.

I just came from a sight that I was able to see my BMI...bad idea!! It has me at 28% body fat, should be 22 %...and that my ideal weight should be 138!! Ain't ever gonna happen!! not unless I get my thighs cut off!! But if I took that seriously and as the last word...then I'd be in a bad way emotionally. Sure, I could drop 10 more lbs...but I think that I'd have trouble maintaining at that weight.

Do what works best for you and helps you be happy with your body!!

I couldn't agree with everyone more. And my experience has been a bit different this time, I'm actually at a lower weight than I've been able to maintain most of my adult life, but with adding in the resistance training--this is where my body went. I think on either end of the spectrum--either lower or higher weight--we want to learn to listen to and trust our bodies about how much we should weigh. We need to learn to have a healthy relationship with healthy, whole foods. We need to learn to eat what's good for us and makes us healthy and well. If we do that, then whatever we weigh is whatever we weigh.

Excellent discussion.

Cleaner diet + more activity lately.

Rachel, I think you're on the right track. If you've gone up and down with the same 5-10 pounds repeatedly, you know what's going to be permanant and what isn't. IMO, one of the tough lessons to be learned in maintenance of any weight loss plan is that you can only reset your set point so much. The only way to foil it is restriction, restriction, exercise, and restriction. Forever, if you want to stay there.
