My reason to sticking reasonably closely is that I have retrained my palate. Now convential sweet foods taste horrible, with a nasty bitter aftertaste. I just don't enjoy them anymore, and I'd like to keep it that way. I'm bringing down salt intake in the same way, and it is making a great difference to my puffy eyes in the morning (I was starting to look like Yoda and was getting very worried). So when I 'breach' the rule, it's for things that don't seem to harm me, like cheese, cream or milk.
