Great Thread. I have been addicted to these stupid Carb Smart Ice Cream bars, allowing myself one per day. My cravings for carbs have definitely increased since I discovered these things. I am going to cut them out and see if I have any progress. Thanks guys.

Although I am new, I have read quite a bit about the Atkins WOE. I also find it very interesting that the views on sugar alchohols has changed dramatically since the induction of new LC foods in the market. I feel that if you have to cheat then SAs are the way to go. Yes it sucks that some can handle them and others can't. But its the same with anything. some people can eat a pint of ice cream or a whole pizza and not gain an ounce. While others gain 5 pounds instantly. I for one feel that a clean induction is going to be the key in my weight loss journey. That means few to none SAs.

I have been scratching my head for 3 years now...wondering why I did not do well with Atkins back then. I was eating those Carb Bars everyday, along with other Atkins food. Now I am just eating regular food, no Atkins food. I hope that was the difference because I am border line Diabetic and I am going to have to follow a "low carb" diet" the rest of my life for health reasons. I would like weight loss to be a result of all this.

Default Confused - Please help!!

HI
Are you talking about alcoholic drinks when you are talking about sugar alcohols ? I have to be in social situations frequently, and I do like to have the odd drink (red wine, votka). Can I add these to my daily count if they do in fact have carbs - and if so, how many carbs should I take into account for each drink so if I have to have a drink, I can add it to my daily total?
Thanks for your help!

Default sugar alcohols - for eating, not drinking :)

as a newbie to this site (not to LC eating) i was reading this thread - and am glad i did, as everyone else. 8 days into induction (for the 4th time - i must be a slow learner) i was eating the LC protein bars for 'fast food'-- and i have only lost .5 pounds thsi week. i am in ketosis, but now i plan to ditch the premade stuff (until today, i had never heard the term franken-food - lmao) and will go back to the foods au natural.

as for the sugar alcohols - no, they are not referring to alcoholic drinks - they are referring to a sugar-type substitute used in making 'diet' foods. read back through the threads - there are several. maltitol (or something like that) and many of its cousins. on a side note, at one point, i was getting severe headaches from one of those sweetners - they went away when the food went away.

Default hello all

Wow.

I just joined and read this old post from last year. I dropped 10 lbs almost instantly when I dropped carb intake however I noticed over last two weeks that I've lost very few lbs...the biggest difference is me eating carb bars twice a day as snacks.

I'll switch to something else as a snack and see if I can get back into dropping lbs.

Sad thing is that I've been in ketosis...

As with anything we should eat these in moderation. I had the worst sweet tooth. But I find that when the craving comes on I have about 2 pcs and I am back to feeling ok. I only use it as an alternative to cheating. I encourage people to buy some just to have as our fellow LC said "in case of emergencies".

One thing that really seems to work at stopping cravings in their tracks is just to dip the tip of a wet finger into some Splenda and put it on your tongue. Works every time, without the calories and sugar alcohols of bars/shakes etc.

Thumbs up Making the Case, et al

Oh, man!
I'm so happy to see this thread.
After eating beaucoop "safe" chocolate and other flavored "net carb" bars duting my last TOM, I am now safely back in induction. That stuff threw my body for a loop--I was craving everything but the stuff I need to eat, and I put back on a few of the nearly 50 lbs. I've lost since October. I really appreciate such honest and candid info on this board!

No, Splenda is sucrose that's been altered so that it's not absorbed. The carbs in Splenda come from a different source: maltodextrin, which is used to bulk it up. If you can get Splenda in liquid form, which is difficult in the US, it's carb free.

Excellent article. A wake up call every newbie needs before they go out and stock up on bars and shakes for induction.

Have you guys tried the ZCarb Chocolate bar which claims to have 0 sugar alcohol, minimal carb and uses splenda? I hope that nutritional info that they offer is correct. I think it's the best choice for a "treat." I ate one today and didn't feel a spike in my bloodsugar.

ZCarb is sweetened with non-caloric sugar alcohols (erythritol) and splenda. It is one of the few bars out there which is telling the truth about its carb contents.

Very interesting. I will check out these ZCarb bars. In the past I would usually avoid most sugar alcohols but it seems like erythitol wouldn't hurt me as much as the other forms of SA
