Default Lipitor and Atkins

Has anyone been prescribed Lipitor for high cholesterol while doing Atkins? My sister does and she has been complaining of having diarrhea after eating high fat foods such as baccon. Does this have anything to do with the Lipitor?

Probably not. The only food I have heard that reacts with those types of drugs in grapefruit. Of course, they tell you not to eat fatty foods with it because that is supposed to be what made the cholesteral high in the first place.

Quote:
• Grapefruit and grapefruit juice may interact with Lipitor. The interaction could lead to potentially dangerous effects. Discuss the use of grapefruit and grapefruit juice with your doctor. Do not increase or decrease the amount of grapefruit products in your diet without first talking to your doctor.
• Eat a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet. To realize beneficial effects from Lipitor, avoid fatty, high-cholesterol foods.

Have to say, I'm sorta freaking out and very relieved all at the same time. My Dh was put on Lipitor about 3 weeks ago. We bought a grapefruit shortly thereafter to share and forgot to eat it. I was going to make it a point of cutting that sucka up tomorrow morning to make sure we ate it and it didn't go bad. So glad I found this thread. I just called him to see if he remembered reading this in the stuff the Pharmacist gave him and he said he read it but didn't recall seeing anything on grapefruit -- but that didn't mean it wasn't there, just that he couldn't recall. Wow. Well, now we know and it'll be grapefruit city for me only. Thanks for the info, fellow LCers. You made my day. Really. Peace.

I don't think you need to worry about half a grapefruit. The intereaction occurs with large quantities, not the occasional serving.
Still...I don't think there is anything that my doctor could say that would convince me to take a Statin drug.

Does your sister still have her gallbladder? No gallbladder can send you running after eating high-fat foods.

Yeah, I know one probably wouldn't "do it", but he's not very disciplined. He was supposed to be on Lipitor in January but I'd read up on the side affects and asked him to try LC first. He'd only done so half-heartedly. I also thought my doc knew more about Atkins because he approved it for him. Turns out with the last time we met with him 3 weeks ago, Dh wondered why his cholesteral was high if he was LCing (which, ehhhhh, he wasn't really, but that's another rant) and the doc said the problem with "a no carb diet" was that "it's not sustainable" . . . ??? eh? NO carb?? Bummer, he has no clue. He suggested South Beach, though. Anyway, DH chose the Lipitor and I kept my mouth shut this time. I'm helping him to LC as far as he'll let me.
