Yes, I will admit, flax oil is an acquired taste. Some brands better than others. I have found Barleans the best tasting and don't even notice it in things anymore.
The reason I suggested adding it to your shake was to help keep you fuller longer (don't know if that is even an issue for you), along with getting the benefits of the oil. Ground flax seed is fine, and you will get the fiber benefit, but very little else. Also, flax seed once ground or pressed (ie;oil) is not stable and oxidizes quickly. If you're going to use ground flax, it's best to buy the whole seeds and grind them yourself (small amounts at a time). A mini coffee grinder works great.
