Hi. I'm pretty sure you're talking about TVP, textured vegetable protein. It's the leftover protein and fiber from soy oil production. Heh heh. I don't think they're supposed to replace real grits. ![Smilie](/images/smilies/smile.gif) Shame on anyone marketing it that way.
Vegetarians use it as a ground beef replacer. I use it in my veggie boyfriends' chili. I think it tastes pretty crappy and I don't bother eating it unless I'm desperate and/or too lazy or poor to buy real ground beef. ![Smilie](/images/smilies/smile.gif) If you'd rather use it than waste it, try reconstituting it in beef broth and blending it in with other ground beef recipes, like burgers, meat loaves, chili, etc.
