Default Multi Vitamins - make me feel lousy

Hi

Does anyone else have problems with multi vitamins? I've tried different ones but they all seem to make me a little sick. It doesn't seem to happen if I take individual vitamins. I used to take Living Fuel which is a powdered broad spectrum/vitamin/green drink type of thing that ageed with me but it is expensive so I was trying to go back to a multi cap instead. I can't figure out if it is the B's or iron or what in particular is making me icky. I don't even like the smell of them.

If anyone else is sensitive but has found a brand that agrees with them could you please let me know. I guess I'll just order some Living Fuel again.

Thanks,
Lizzy

Lizzy, sometimes the time of day that you take your vitamins makes a big difference. I know that when I was pregnant especially I found that taking my vitamins at night made a big difference. Some people also find that taking them with a meal also helps.
Just some things you could try....

I find that I have to take my vits and supps with at least a small amount of food - even if it is just a hard boiled egg - or else my stomach gets upset. That in itself is novel since I have a cast iron digestive system and NEVER have stomach issues. Also, I find taking them later in the day, like at lunch is more agreeable.

If you take them on an empty stomach - you usually get sick. Do you take them with food?

I recommend the Synergy line.

They range from $14 per month to $300 per month.

Thanks for all the answers. I do take them with a meal - usually breakfast. I'll try them at a bigger meal and see what happens.
thanks
Lizzy

I take my vitamins with breakfast, too, but always after I finish eating. They make me nauseated otherwise!

Try taking them with food. I can't seem to tolerate magnesium on an empty stomach.

Hi there,
Iron may well be the culprit..I know that it makes me very nauseous. If you think you are getting enough iron fom your diet, you could consider taking a men's multivitamin (generic and women-specific brands tend to have high iron levels) Hope that helps!

nbro:

I think you may be right - I have often thought it could be the iron or maybe two many B's.
I wonder if I do get enough iron - I'll have to look into it.

Thanks

Normally people on low carb diets get enough iron. You should not need iron supplement on a low carb diet.

The iron you get from food supposively does not build up in your body. Most of the iron supplements *do* build up in your body and become toxic.

Regarding the men's versus women's vitamins -- I would recommend that men take the men's vitamins and women take the women's vitamins. These specialty vitamins are formulated specifically for each sex's requirements.

For example, men's vitamins has Pygeum Extract, Saw Palmetto Extract, extra zinc, etc -- that men need to help and protect things specific to their equipment. I don't know much about women's specific requirements but maybe this will help:

For a woman's multivitamin, I would recommend

http://www.vitacost.com/Store/Produ...rchText=synergy

it is iron free.

If you need an iron supplement (until the low carb diet kicks in) I might suggest

http://www.vitacost.com/Store/Produ...SearchText=iron

it does say that most iron supplements (but not this one) can cause stomach / intestional distress
