Default DOMS 24hrs/48hrs

I was just wondering if anyone knew why DOMS takes 48hrs to take effect for LBWO's and only 24hrs for UBWO's?

Hey there.....

I've done some reading about DOMS and from what I've read, they really don't know the "why" of DOMS at all. So why it seems to work the way that you described for you.....is anybody's guess. I most often experience DOMS 36 hours after exercise both LB and UB. From time to time....and usually if it's a new set of exercises, it can be within 8 hours.

How's that for a non answer answer?

Marlaine

Hmm, my guess would be that it involves the size and training state of the muscle group involved - smaller muscles hurt faster?

I'm always amused by developing DOMS. (ok, I confess, I can NOT type that acronym with a straight face, esp in a sentence like that. If you don't get it, I'm not explaining!) When I was a whippersnapper running track in school, It would hit me hard and fast, as in overnight. I'd wake up and would be so stiff and sore I couldn't get out of bed. Now, I work out, go to bed, wake up and feel just fine. And then I start feeling smug and thinking I got off scott free. Then about 2 or 3 o'clock I'll get up from my desk and notice that I feel 'a little stiff'. Then I get to the 48 hr point and I'm contemplating getting a ladder so I don't have to raise my elbow any to get the pepper out of the spice cupboard, or I'm doing anything possibile to avoid having to go upstairs because getting over the baby gate will about kill me.

Cheers,

Friday

LOL....I think the worst is when the DOMS hit the hamstrings. Every notice how hard it is to squat over the throne then?

Yep, 1 o'clock, sitting at my desk and definitely have the pre-DOMS slightly stiff feeling. It's early today, and it's in my calves where it should be after I upped the weights to 375 on the calf press! Betcha the rest will hurt too as it was a heavy workout!

Got my Glutamine and gonna pop some potassium, too as the one calf feels like it wants to cramp.

Cheers,

Friday

Default DOMS

For my LB it seems that the DOMS lasts (not starts) for at least 48 hours. It makes it hard to get in my leg workouts! I do yoga and Pilates, too, and they contribute to it as well. I really want to build bulk on my legs and am having no luck.

Hi Jen

Try increasing the weights and do less reps. Dont forget to take anti-oxidants after your workouts {e.g. Vitamin C & E, Green Tea, CLA} and eat within 45 mins {lots of protein} Good luck!

I would LOVE to try Pilates but there are no classes here for that. I know you can get the video tape but that doesnt appeal to me as much as a class situation, to get pointers on whether my form is right or not.

Jen,

I haven't peeked into your journal, but make sure you are getting enough protein to support building muscle. I'm a newbie to lifting, so I'm packing it on at a furious rate - 2 lbs of muscle a WEEK sometimes. I am also eating 180 - 200g or so of protein a day, or about 1.5 g protein per lb of lean mass.

Up your weights, lower your reps and eat more protein should do it. And maybe some glutamine, too. It helps get rid of the soreness after.

Cheers,

Friday
