familial hypercholesterolemia and grantmother
I'm new here today because I have some questions.
I don't beleive cholesterol is the biggest cause of heart disease and that saturated fat cause high cholesterol because then my cholesterol should have been very high since I eat a lot of saturated fat.
But my grandmother has has high cholesterol from the first time she measured it. I think thats is around 15 years ago..
It was 12 and was supposed to be 6.. She was put on statins and have used that for a long time with several side effects.
She also was diagnosed with diabetes type 2, around 1 year ago.
She also is a bit overweight..
Grandmas mother died young of an heart attack and had diabetes. She ate a lot of saturated fat from butter and thats why my grandmother always have been thinking that saturated fat caused here mom do die.
But I have been reading about familial hypercholesterolemia (FH).
Statins have reduced my grandmother cholesterol but I'm thinking that maybe she have FH?
I'm a bit confused about statins, cholesterol and FH. Some doctors say that if the cause of high cholesterol is FH its dangerous and the person need statins to bring it down.
Other doctors say saturated fat cause the cholesterol to go even higher.
And other that FH is not possible to treat without statins because it don't respond in dietary changes.
Does anyone have any advice?
I don't think anyone knows the whole truth but what should I advice here to do?
I have been talking so long about cholesterol and that its not caused my fat and that its not dangerous, but if it is FH then the whole picture has changes, or what??
Please help..
