Default Newbie (contemplating) Question

Hi Everyone!

I have been perusing your threads here for a while, and it has sparked an interest in this WOE for me. As you can see, I am fairly new to these boards, have a lot of weight to lose, am doing Atkins Induction currently, and actually started Atkins after my Dr. suggested it for PCOS. I am enjoying Atkins so far, but after reading posts here and some on the web that I found, this WOE seems more natural encompassing fruit. My husband is also a hunter and this plan appealed to him as well (he has proportionately the same amount to lose as I do). I have ordered the books (Paleolithic & Neanderthin) from Amazon, and while I am waiting on them, I was curious about a couple of things. First, what turned you all on to this WOE? Any ladies here with PCOS and having success? And how do you handle seasonings, salad dressings, etc..? That last one is a big concern for the hubby. Any help would be much appreciated!! Thanks much!

I decided to start eating Paleo because of the success that I've heard of people having when trying to cure acne. It did that very well. I also have tons more energy, no depression and much higher sex drive.

For seasonings, I use a lot of herbs and spices. There are a lot of them out there and once you get used to using them you'll be amazed. I personally love garlic, onions, celery, ginger, curry, basil, cumin, cayenne, etc. There are a lot of wonderful flavours to discover.

For salad dressings I use mainly olive oil, mustard, vinegar (only kinda paleo but oh well), wine, pepper, basil etc. There are a lot of paleo dressings! There is also paleo mayo made from vinegar, olive oil and eggs. It's really good!

Well, that's true, except that eating fruit will usually slow or stop weight loss, even when eating this way, so it's still better to keep it to a minimum or stick to low-glycemic index fruit, like berries, until you are down to your target weight. After that, enjoy! Same goes for nuts--you can eat them occasionally, but in excess they may cause your weight loss to stall.

You will find some significant differences between the two books. It appears that most of the people in this cave abide more by the recommendations in Neanderthin.

Welcome and best of luck!

Howard

I came hunting for help with my arthritis on top of the help that losing weight would give me. I know that if I lose weight the pain of walking will be much better, but the pain was what stopped me from moving in the first place when I wasn't nearly so heavy.

So I am trying neanderthin on for size to see if I can and will want to do it for the rest of my life. Marty

I have achy knees. I believe that it is arthritis. I noticed that when I exercise the pain worsened. However, I continued to exercise and now my pain was virtually gone. When I moved into my house I had to climb stairs and the pain returned. I had to keep climbing the stairs or move out of my new home. I massaged my knees and it really helped. I am once again pain free.

I really think that if you go back to walking, combined with losing weight, the pain will go away whithin 2-6 weeks. I think that the movement is just as important as the weightloss

Welcome to the cave LoriLoCarb and best wishes for loads of success in NeanderThin eating. I adopted it because it made sense and I didn't have to count things like carbs or calories. Easier for me to follow.

I became interested in Neanderthin when I heard about it on the ASDLC board and began reading about it on the internet before buying the book.

I have PCOS (diagnosed in 1997) and find that being on Neanderthin is better for me then being on Atkins. I do a lot better without dairy and enjoy having a peice or two of fruit most days....not *all* days but most days.

As for seasonings I do not use salt but I use pepper and other spices/seasonings and olive oil with lemon or lime juice for salad dressings.
I am also going to be making my own neanderthin mayo as soon as the store bought jar in the fridge is used up. I want to use the jar for the homemade stuff.
