WereBear - I agree with you. The self-righteous assumptions of the animal rights activists, that only by being a vegan can you show that you care about animals, is misinformed and arrogant. Temple Grandin is a great example of someone who has taken a different path. There is also the talk on dietdoctor.com by Peter Ballerstedt entitled "Grass Based Health and the Ruminant Revolution". You need to be a member to watch it.

There's an article by Diana Rodgers RD on the same topic:

Not only do I deal with the metabolic issues caused by a high carb diet but I have severe intestinal issues that make it impossible for me to eat any of the sources of protein that vegetarians and vegans eat. That includes all legumes, eggs and dairy. I pay attention to the quality of my food, don't buy factory farmed meats or farmed fished. If I didn't eat animal protein I would be very ill.

Vegetables are the way to go seems to be the mantra nowadays but its not mine. Agriculture is not free of harm to animals. Many die in the clearing and maintaining of the land and in the destruction of animal habitats. We can be concerned about the welfare of animals and concerned about our own welfare and find a way to live and eat that honors both our needs as best we can.
