Hi, Momx5. This is a good place to ponder questions like that. Why don't you start a journal here, where people can talk with you individually? You can describe your goals, your fears, your eating plan. Other people can really help.

Most "diets" work. Even "everything in moderation" works. That is, if you can figure out what "moderation" is for you, and stick with it for life. Usually that means counting calories. But then, you can probably eat 900 calories worth of brownies as your daily allowance and not do your body any good. So....

Here we think seriously about the quality of the food, not so much about the quantity.

The only way you'll know what "works" for you is to give some plan a good long trial for yourself. So pull up a chair. Read all about low-carb eating. Pick a plan and get started.

Best wishes!
P. S. You'll find a good quick-start plan for free at Dietdoctor.com. Lots of encouraging success stories, too.
