In general machines are easier for beginners to use than free weights, but free weights give better results.

It's an easy to use site that set-up routines based on what equipment you have available (including none). It also hase videos of how to do each exercise.
If you go to a gym, have someone there show you how to do the exercises. Some of the machines are not easy to figure out.
