Vitamin D pill can ease back pain, say scientists

Taking vitamin D pills could help to ease painful conditions such as chronic backache and arthritis, according to researchers.

The benefits of vitamin D for bones are well established, but there remains much debate on whether it has an effect on other conditions.

A new review of research in the field, published in the Journal of Endocrinology, found that “vitamin D seems to stimulate anti-inflammatory processes in some cases and thus to relieve the painful sensation of many diseases”.

The paper suggests that when combined with good-quality sleep, vitamin D could help to manage conditions including arthritis, menstrual cramps and chronic back pain.

Monica Levy Andersen, who conducted the review with colleagues at the federal university of Sao Paulo, referred to studies that showed giving the vitamin to people with various types of chronic pain led to them reporting better sleep patterns and less pain. “We can hypothesise that suitable vitamin D supplementation combined with sleep hygiene may optimise the therapeutic management of pain-related diseases,” she said.

Sleep hygiene involves developing habits before sleep, such as avoiding alcohol and caffeine and reducing electronic devices in the bedroom. In February, scientists called for vitamin D to be added to everyday foods, after a study found that 3.25 million fewer people would suffer from coughs and colds each year if they took the vitamin.

Public Health England advises people to consider taking a daily supplement of 10mcg of vitamin D in autumn and winter. Those whose skin has little or no exposure to the sun should consider taking it all year round.
