Re fructose and glucose and HFCS: Calianna, you may find of it of some comfort that regular old corn syrup (like Karo) which is what your mother probably used back then is 100% glucose. In fact, HFCS is named High Fructose Corn Syrup that because it has way more fructose and sweetness than traditional corn syrup.
As far as the difference between HFCS and table sugar, inflammabl, you are right, only 5% difference in amount of glucose, and Taubes (and maybe Lustig as well) treats them as equivalent in damage to the body.
