Although the USDA guidelines claim to offer a range of eating patterns, they are mostly a variation on the high grain, low fat theme. Suggesting that carbohydrate sensitive/diabetic people follow the same high carb diet recommended has to have been the most damaging advice of all.

This has been a concern since 1980. A report by the National Academy of Sciences, Food and Nutrition Board stated, “The Board considers it scientifically unsound to make single, all-inclusive recommendations… Needs for energy and essential nutrients vary with age, sex, physiological state, hereditary factors, physical activity, and the state of health. The nutritional needs of the young growing infant are distinctly different from those of the inactive octogenarian…”


The Nutrition Coalition continues their advocacy work to change this situation and reached out for donations last week.

We need your support to educate policy makers, influencers and the public about the problems with the guidelines, so that people suffering from obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, among other nutrition-related diseases, get the sound nutritional advice that they need to become healthy.

The current guidelines have long been based upon weak science that has since been contradicted in large, government-funded clinical trials. Some of that original bad advice has been overturned: e.g., the caps on cholesterol were finally dropped in 2015.

These recommendations do not just lack a foundation in rigorous evidence. In some cases, they have been demonstrated to cause actual harm, particularly for those with metabolic diseases.
